It also might be of interest to note that before the song even starts with the closeup of Jimmy by the bass cabs, you can see clearly that there are no heads.

AIC used to be one of my top five bands in high school, and I still dig them from time to time, but they had a trend towards progressively mixing the bass lower and lower with each release.

He's got a rack with a pair of SVT II Pros in it. It's probably sitting right behind the cabs where his bass tech sits.

If their live tone is amazingly awesome then what could they possibly not be getting ?

Is it that TB dogma says they are blasphemers and heretics because they are not following the One True Law(®™) as given to us by He Who Shall Not Be Named in a hallucination induced by listening to a solo by Michael Anthony ?

I don't think those are 410HLFs because they don't have the large ports on the bottom and they were REALLY deep. Usually he uses 18s like in this video so I think those were SVT-18s or possibly custom boxes with Ampeg logos since he is an endorser.

I saw em live last year and his Bass tone sounded great. Im pretty sure those are dummies for looks anyway, hes either just mic'ing one cab of he has an Iso box next to the Bass tech as stated in earlier posts. These days you dont need a wall of amps but ppl love to see it so...

Ok, couple of things:

1) of course the stage sound doesn't matter, he gets his tone from a DI rig anyway.

2) clearly no heads on the cabs but could be a power amp rack behind.

3) the bass is probably lower than in the past because they now have a second guitarist on stage. Layne never played guitar, William does.

3.5) the line on the acoustic bass was "friends don't let friends get friends haircuts", directed at Metallica, who were in the audience for AIC Unplugged. They had just done the makeover thing for Load, and AIC were poking fun at them.

4) He's Mike Frickin' Inez. He can do whatever he wants!! Seriously, the guy is one of the busiest bassists in rock, and we're gonna criticize his methods?!? Go play a gig.

another non TB dude doing everything wrong (aside from getting paid to play music, landing a great gig, playing on a stage that 99.something percent of every armchair quarterback here never will, etc etc). He should definitely be playing a single 12 and a nordy- then he'd be way more cool (and informed too).

Layne played guitar only when they did Angry Chair, which he wrote the music for ( it is the only AIC song he wrote the music for).

I have seen them with William 4 or 5 times. I really liked seeing them do all the old stuff again. To me, both of the new records sound very much like Jerry Cantrell solo albums ( Not that there aren't a few gems on both of his solo albums).

I miss Layne and Mike Starr.

As countless others have already said, There's PA to distribute the sound to the audience.
And the musicians most probably use in-ears as already has been said numerous times.

In that case the stage rig or its directivity or lack of it matters very little or none at all.

In fact, horizontal stacking with its beaming and comb-filtering nature can help focus the stage sound not to interfere with the PA.


Pros do it differently and usually for very good reasons, be that reason the appearance, "feel" or something entirely else.

Their way is not to be confused with our weekend warrior or basement player ways who have to rely mostly on our rig.

IME/IMHO anyway.

I thought Kimmell introduced them as Alice In Change!!!! Must be getting old and losing my hearing...:help: Maybe I got too close to Mikes' massive rig!!:eek:
AIC has always been one of my favorite bands and Mike Inez is one of my favorites (and he plays Warwick basses too)!!:hiding: :hiding: :D :D
