MIM '70s Deluxe Active Jazz Bass?

Saw one of these today at the local GC. Natural ash body, bound n blocked maple neck and fretboard. 2 Fender noiseless pickups, active EQ and some kind of high mass bridge. Played and sounded GREAT. I looked it up on the Fender site and saw nothing... Is this a new model? GC exclusive? Just wondering if anyone else had seen one or had any info

Nope, I played one last week. It played well, but I couldn't agree with it. That said, it's me. I believe it is a G.C special.

I've seen a couple at our local GCs. It is an FSR (has sticker on the back of the headstock), and it appears to be a GC exclusive.

I bought this Fender FSR '70s Active Jazz in Natural Ash with gloss Maple board from my local GC.
Upon bringing it home and doing a close inspection, I had to return the bass only after about 2 hours.

The tone was good with decent tonal range.
However, there were more than a few issues.
1) There was a HUGH gap in neck pocket on the treble-side, The gap was large enough to insert a credit card!!!
2) The fret ends were sharp and sticking out so much that I could probably use the neck to cut down tree branches.
3) The truss rod or neck had an issue: when there was a beck relief, the bottom of the relief (the lowest point of the curvature) was NOT around the middle 7-8th fret. Instead, the lowest point was around 3-4th frets, which made even relatively low action impossible!!! :scowl:
(I had actually never saw a bass neck doing that!!!)

I just can't understand how Fender could let something like this pass through the inspection and expect people to pay $900.

So in conclusion, this is a bass you should inspect before you buy (or ANY Fender, for that matter)...
BTW, it looked just drop-dead gorgeous!!! I just wish it didn't have those QC issues...

I bought one from my local GC and it sounds great and I have no issues with it. I went to both GC in my town and played three of them but only one of them actually sounds very USA, PUNCHY and all of that jazz bass stuff. The other two sounds like a fender squire. Im loving the bass. I am usually a USA man but this one had me sold.

Hi grooveologist, Congrats on your purchase. I've been trying to buy one of these from my local GC but the one they have had a bad volume control, 3 strings buzz in the saddles and no limited edition sticker. Asked them to order another one and they said they couldn't until the one they had sold. Good luck with that. Anyway can you tell me what else you play, what you compared this to and anything else that may help me figure out if I want to pursue this purchase? Ideally I would like an American deluxe but can't afford it. My current gig bass is a Lakeland 4402 Deluxe which I like but the body and neck are a little too big (getting older). I really like the way it sounds though.

Checked one out today at GC. Very nice bass. Sounded great and seemed to be put together well. I ran it by the wife and got the old "you have to many basses already" line...

Can Anyone post any pics a or a link to this new bass? I did tryed it out man for the money not bad at all the neck felt great and the bass had a very punchy single coil tone. But at the the same time you can spend an extra $100 on a Geddy Lee Jazz as well.

Picked one up today at GC and threw some DR Marcus Millers on there. The neck had a slight bow, but a simple truss adjustment squared that away.
They also had a Marcus Miller J Bass and I a/b'd the both of 'em. And this MIM model can throw down every bit as well as the Miller. And for about $400 less.

I played one today and it was great!!! Thinking of trading my Marcus Miller Jazz for it. It seems to have a lot more thump than my MM bass does.

I just bought one yesterday! First off, the action is sick! I have always had a thing for jazz basses and the price was right. AS the story goes, the price tag on it was 599.00. I played both the American Standard Jazz bass, the Geddy Lee, and also the Squire 70's jazz. All I know is I kept going back to this one, it really sounds good, and the action on the neck is superb. I think it had been there a while because the guy grumbled when I asked for a discount because it was a floor model, and when he went to go ring it up he realized it was suppose to be marked at 900.00. He looked back and said, how about a 300.00 discount, plus he had to give me the 10% as we agreed on before hand, so I think I did pretty well. If you see one, Buy it! It sounds like some had some issues, but mine is great. Only thing, it does not come with any case, not even a soft shell. I could'nt really complain though since I thought I was already way ahead!
