MIM Fender P-(sub)bass

Thought I'd share this... got this from some scummy kid that didn't want it and was just going to pawn it for money for pills. :scowl: Was missing a tuner when I got it, and the other three were all loose and messed up, so I replaced them all. Put a set of Circle K strings on it, F#(.182),B(.136), E(.100),A(.76). Had the same strings on my Thunderbird but it just didn't sound right. Sounds way better on this bass. Much clearer. Got the setup nice and low. Intonation is near perfect, something I couldn't get close to on the F# and B strings with the Tbird. Anyways, here it is...

Has a couple chunks of paint missing near the neck, and it's missing the metal plate where the neck bolts on. Eventually going to get a chrome cover for the bridge, get the plate for the neck and the knobs that it's missing. Plan on having this bass for a long time.

Are you telling us you bought this P off a kid so he could have some drug money?
His loss (of his life possibly) is your gain. Congrats?

Well, should have clarified that... Kid tells me to "give him 20 bucks for it, or whatever, it doesn't matter". He's some idiot that a friend of mine got stuck living with due to old roommates leaving, and putting in a good word for scumbags to replace them. I never gave him anything for it. I'm giving him money for it if he ever asks, but unfortunately he probably forgot about it. He screwed my friend over on a lot of stuff when they all moved out, and I wasn't about to watch an awesome bass get tossed away for nothing. Dude didn't care about it either way.

Tangent,
The kid was going to get money for drugs no matter what. If Matt didn't buy it, he would have sold it to somebody else or pawned it. You can't help losers, mate, and if I had the opportunity I would have purchased the bass from him as well, because somebody else would have if I hadn't. I guess the point is, it wouldn't have made a difference and you should leave your subjective point of view politics out the thread and just be happy that the bass has a better home now and be happy for Matt.

Anyway, Matt, nice snag ;)

Thanks. Kind of the way I see it. I have no interest in even giving him money for it (potentially supporting his pill habit), but like I said, will if he ever asks. That's about all I feel I owe him. It's not a nice situation, I understand that, but I don't feel bad for him or feel bad taking the bass.

What if it's stolen? Always a possibility in a situation like this.

Nah. I'm sure it's not stolen. Sure in the couple years he owned it that would have came up to bite him on the @$$...The guy developed some bad habits the past few months, but stealing was never one of them. I wasn't friends with him, but hung out with him a bit because he lived with my friend. Not friends, just neutral to me. He was alright till recently, he got sketchy, screwed my friend over on stuff when they were all in the process of leaving the house, and didn't seem to care about much but xanax when they moved out over a month ago. I was around when they were moving out, and was there when he was trying to figure out what to do with this bass. In one day he went from wanting to pawn it, to telling me it's mine and I could pay him for it at a later point (I didn't have the money at the time), which is when he made the comment that he didn't really care if he got money from me or not. I took it, have had it for over a month (without hearing a thing from the guy) and just fixed it up and got it playable again. I have one of my "dream" basses and while the circumstances aren't the prettiest, at least this bass isn't getting pawned for not even a quarter of it's worth, or sitting around with 3 tuners on it collecting dust. Figured it having a good home was a good thing. Not saying I don't understand the concerns of course.

You did nothing wrong. Enjoy the bass...but make sure and get that neckplate.

Nice score. Thinking of doing something like this to my Yamaha - does it put more tension on the neck?

Pretty sure it's not any more tension than any other set of strings. I had to do a slight truss rod adjustment, set the intonation, action, and file the nut and it was ready to go. These strings are very flexible for their gauge so don't let the huge size fool you. Very easy to play.

I think the yamaha is begging for something like this then. Amp issues?

I'm using two 200 watt solid state Sunn amps from the 70's and 2 2x15's also from the 70's. I've had no trouble with using this stuff. A lot of people here say you need a thousand+ watts of new amp power, through modern speakers and an active bass and all this crap for super low tunings. But, in my experience with it, none of that is absolutely necessary. I'm getting a great sound out of a passive bass through old amps and cabs.

Those strings look about ready to pop outta the nut , did you widen the slots?

Yup. Actually, I think this is the best job I've done filing a nut before. Widened the slots without going deeper. With the .182, I'd say about a quarter of the string sits in the nut, the rest is above it still. It looks like it would be jumping out all the time, but it stays put.

Metal Matt Refreshing to hear from a young bass thumper. Quality stuff is quality stuff, and that quality will endure through time. Sunn, along with Acoustic, Ampeg and Kustom made quality gear in the 60's and 70's that is not obsolete and sounds great even in 2011. Good job.
