MIM for MIJ?

I bought a new MIM P about two months ago.

Now I have the chance to trade it for a used MIJ ('96 I think) from the same store.

I like the paint job on the MIJ, but it has a Rosewood neck. The MIM has a Maple neck, which I like.

Is there a really big difference in quality?

Would you trade?

On a side note, the used MIJ costs as much as the MIM did new.

My MIJ 75 Reissue Jazz Bass (and I think it's a 96, as well) is outstanding. I wouldn't trade it for a MIA Jazz.

Seriously though you should try playing the MIJ and see if it compares to the MIM

I would... but I like rosewood. keep in mind that Fender Japan basses come in several pricepoint/quality levels, ranging from comparable to Mexican to comparable to higher end US models - As I'm sure this music store is aware. It's all just part of my charm. People get to wound up these days and need to relax and learn to laugh at themselves once in a while. Never honestly played a MIM bass but I wouldn't say no just because of where it was made. Then again this is all a mute point considering that I gave my advice on the matter... try, compare, and proceed.

I would keep the bass that speaks to you more. If you have to, blindfold yourself and do a test run on each.

If you went to sell your MIM its resale is going to be probably 300$ maybe 350$ , that MIJ is going to have better resale, most are better instruments.

Fender is a production instrument every single instrument varies so i cant say yes go trade because it could be a lemon and the MIM a player, but generally yes make the trade.

MIJ is way better quality. Not being racist or anything (because I am Japanese) but the Japanese devote themselves to their craftsmanship. They may not have the raw materials American companies can purchase, but they make due with what they have with quality and hard work. i would trade a MIM for a MIJ anyday.

Depends on who your talking to would i say that to my Mexican friend? yes because were pals and give each other crap about thing , but to a board of strangers of which numerous people are of hispanic origin? no i wouldnt there is nothing charming in that.

To the OP: which bass works better for you is very subjective. Play them both...front to back if you can. They make your desicsion.

I agree. I haven't gotten my hands on a lot of MIJ stuff, but I have an MIM Strat and MIM Jazz Bass, both are FANTASTIC instruments. But, maybe I just got lucky and ended up with some gems. I have played some that were just plain bad. But, I will never get rid of either of those instruments, the Strat was my first Fender and the Jazz was my first bass. I've changed the pickups in both, but I love them. If you feel the same for your MIM I would hang onto it.

If it was a straight trade...no cash involved and the necks were both maple, which it sounds like what you are looking for then I would go for it if the mij felt and sounded better than what you have. If not then why fix something that aint broke?

If you are just trading from an MIM to an MIJ from a perceived quality or prestige standpoint, I wouldn't bother. I would rather have a new MIM bass that I liked and knew hasn't been tweaked to death over a 96 MIJ that could have any number of issues.

it's best that you try if you really like the feel of the MIJ... you would know for sure.

I recently tried out an MIJ, and it didn't feel quite right for me so i passed up on it.
