MIM Jazz neck on a 50s P. Will it fit?

I love, love, love the tone, look and weight of my 50s P. I absolutely hate the neck. Its too damn big for my play style and I don't want to sand it down. Will the neck off my mim jazz fit into my 50s p body? Like, perfectly? My only other option is to sell the thing. I don't have money to put into it for a new neck and honestly could use the money from the bass. I would hate to part with it but I'm out of ideas. Thanks for the input.

A MIM J bass and a MIM classic 50s P both have 2.5'' pockets so they should interchange just fine. Take your time to make sure you dont crack the paint at the neck pocket edges as it maybe a tight squeeze. Fender necks interchange but still can vary ever so slightly. I am sure it will be fine though. You can also sell the 50's P neck, some people like me really like those necks.

I had thought of selling the p neck if the j neck fit. Its a possibility. How much would one be able to sell the neck for, realistically?

Ok. So the j neck does not fit the 50s p body snug. Not at all. It fits but there is considerable wiggle room. A mil. or so on either side of the slot. The neck is able to move many degees left and right. This is all before I put the screws back into place, of course. If installed, I figure is might hinder a bit of tone do to loss of resonance as well as impending structural damage to the body at the slot. Am I correct in this? Is there something I can do to fix/rig up for a solution?

I've had that much play in the neck pocket of MIA Fenders with original necks, so it isn't necessarily a problem. If you line up the screw holes without needing to force it, you shouldn't damage anything. Get the screws in without forcing it. Put the strings back on with just enough tension to make them straight, loosen the neck screws a bit, gently align the neck and re-tighten the screws. I like to use a business card or two to help keep the neck straight while re-tightening and then remove them.

I would be surprised if you notice a significant difference in resonance, but you can always put the original neck back on.
