Over the course of the last few years the passion for this project has led me along with those involved on an amazing journey. We have begun to create a platform where we can use the collective ideals of jazz in the art of making a film. It is with their encouragement and support that I am presenting this project to you.

While I recognize the undertaking of a project of this scale can be challenging for a filmmaker, I am completely dedicated to the realization of this work while staying true to its vision. In many ways it has been under development for the greater part of my life. It is my wish to be sincere and genuine to this new project that I would love to share with all of you and this is why it is 100% independent. For that I need your help, as a community we will build together this figure of Mingus who was much more than a static icon. You can and be a part of this process.

Music has been used as an instrument to chronicle and share traditions over centuries for people throughout the world. It is a fundamental element in the social fabric of America, reflecting many aspects of its history that are often undocumented. Charles Mingus used music to narrate the transitions and transformations that America was undergoing.

"Standing in the Shadows of Motown" was great, and finally gave James Jamerson his due - now it's time we did the same for Mingus. I see that. This would be a great documentary to be made. I’ve seen Triumph Of the Underdog, which was great, but it didn’t go in depth enough on his early days of playing. His many collaborations throughout the years would be nice to examine in a documentary format in more detail as well. I would also love to see more about his work as a composer - and not just the depth they gave to the crafting and performance of Epitaph. I’d like to see something like the Coltrane doc that’s on Netflix now but for Mingus.

It's been over eight years since they met their funding goal, hunh?

If they had invested that $45,200 in a total stock market mutual fund in 2011, they could have paid back all of their supporters by and walked away with a cool $25,800.

It appears the project was still in production, and had recently gathered more funds, at that time. I have to wonder whether Sue's big release of back-catalog material might have had an effect on this.
