Missing the Peavey Tone

I've got two Combo 300's that are ancient--I've used other stuff, but keep coming back to the Combo 300...I bought one of the first Peavey Bass Combos when they came out (think it was 150 watts), and comes down to the fact that they sound good...they're reliable...they're cheap.

Lots of Peavey love here, and I'll echo the crowd. I do have to disagree about the shallow version of the 215 not being up to par. I have one that I rebuilt and it currently houses Eminence Deltalite 2515s-a very nice match for the smaller internal volume. Best of all, the cab weighs about 70 pounds, so it's an easy schlep. I also use a TVX 115 (sporting a KL 3015) and it is a wonderful bottom cab for my current playing situation and again, not too heavy. To the OP, I hope ya find what ya's lookin' for.

OK, so I'm endorsed by Peavey, like their stuff, & love their bass gear. Playing a maple USA Cirrus 4 with a hipshot extender, through a BAM. I knew I had a killer sound when I was doing a bar gig in a long room, & the studio engineer with whom I'd recorded showed up.
He caught me on the set break & told me he'd been looking for the SVT/refrigerator combination on stage then realized what I was using. He also mentioned that our onstage mix for FOH was killer, too! Way cool, validation as a player & an engineer!
Bottom line, the BAM is super flexible, works great, just didn't market well for reasons I don't understand, but I'd love to get another one, or at least the head as a backup. Beats everything else I've heard for modeling amps. Check it out if you get the chance, folks.

I had a similar scenario with different brands.

I love the tone of my old combo but it's underpowered.
My stack does sound good but I liked the other tone much better.

Only in the last month did the obvious hit me.
I'm sure many others have done this too.

I pumped pink noise through both rigs and used a spectrum analyzer app on my iphone. Kept switching between amps with an A/B box while making adjustments. I tweaked out a 21 band EQ that I keep in the rack with the head to attempt to reproduce the sound of the old amp as closely as possible

That EQ's now dedicated to only reproducing the response of the old amp on the stack. They sound damned near the same.

I've never been happier with the stacks sound.

It's got balls... I like balls. ;)

+1 for TNT's tho dont expect much from the newer ones. When they went to the black and white styling they seemed to have lost a lot. I find that the combos preamp has a big contribution as I used mine for a while with a peavey Bassist pre that cleaned things up a lot and was a lot more dynamic, but, the stock pre has a certain "musicality and mellowness that always sounds nice. It reminds me of what Acoustic's amps (that I've played through) contribute to the sound......kinda sloppyish....but very pleasing too.

I bought my Peavey Mark IV here around the time of April 08' and just last year bought a cab. A Peavey 115BVX from a pawn shop with a reasonable return policy and manager. It had a few cosmetic issues. A small tear in the tolex that could have been easily fixed with a heavy duty staple gun. I paid only a few dollars more than I did for the head. Too bad I haven't been able to test it to its full capabilities as I am in an apartment complex.

I've been playing through a MkIV since I bought it new in 1982. I won't part with it for love or money! I've used many different cabs over the years and am using a Peavey 410TX right now. But, I believe that the MKIV is 'voiced for 2x15 cabs because it always seems to sound best with that type cab. I used to run it through 2 2x15 which gave it a 2 ohm load thus running the head at full power. It got a little warmer of course but the sound was awesome!

I'm going to refurbish the old Acoustic cab (still have it) because I don't get that low end "push" from the 4x10 and I'll run both cabs together.......that should be just fine! :D
