Mixing Bass and Kick drum: EQ technique - what do you do?

If you'v ever met a sound engineer from this era, you may realize this might not be a joke...

I've been doing it even longer, and he's a joke. Even in the '80s, I understood that the bass and the kick need to complement each other, so that when played together, you can hear both clearly, and they present a cohesive sound.

Uh huh, thats why I listen to those Motley Crue recordings, and think, HOLY COW DOES TOMMY'S KICK DRUM SOUND LIKE ****!!!!! sounds like someone banging on one of those big ass marching bass drums( well, I guess cuz his is isnt it??????? lol)
