MJT NBD and total disappointment

That's a beautiful color and I like it a lot... But Sherwood green? Hmmm.. Looks very much ocean turquoise to me (which is my personal favorite). After you sent the first body back for the color being way off, I'm starting to wonder if the painter went color blind or something??
Yeah the color isn't totally right. And I sent quite a few pictures of the Fender Sherwood Green to MJT in different lighting hoping they could get it closer. Now I am wishing I went with something easier to match like Sonic Blue. I wasn't 100% satisfied but just didn't want to fight this battle any more. I already have a metallic ocean turquoise on my Fender elite jazz bass and this is too close to that.
Sorry to hear that. I ordered a chocolate brown body a couple years ago from them and got a very dark purple/maroon body (basically it was pure black indoors and a very dark purple in the sunlight). I did send that one back and got a chocolate color the 2nd time, but I went to Wal-Mart and literally picked out a paint sample of the color I wanted and sent it to them in the mail and said "match this please".

It looks nice - maybe not what you were going for, but not bad. I would have hit it with more amber in a clear overcoat. It will amber over time making it lean more toward green. Men are more prone to being flour-blind than women - it's actually pretty common.

Good lord even with a hand held sample? Wow. Well I'm definitely sorry that happened but it's nice to know I'm not alone. I don't think I'll be doing a project like this again any time soon, it was a one off where I got everything I wanted on my bass (except the exact color) but for the headache of building it. I did some reading around here and did see that anyone else had any issues and I thought it would be nice to have a nitro finish that would wear over time. I've already got a chip in the paint to start the process from where I dropped a drill bit!
I'd love to see a picture of the pink fiesta red bass by the way. I'm curious.

I'm not pleased hearing this about MJT because after hearing about and seeing good examples for years I recently sent them a J body to be finished. It will be done in June. I sent them reference pics and laid out exactly what I wanted in a couple emails. I'm hoping for an aged BMM with minor relic-ing. BMM is one of those colours that is all across the board - can look lavender or mauve and everything in between. I'll just hope for the best and will post here once it returns. I could have done it myself, but I was curious to see what they would do. Luckily as a finisher myself with a good colour sense, I have options to correct it if it's not what I am expecting.
Here's an example of an aged/relic finish I did. It's LPB (lacquer) with an oil-based amber over-stain topped with clear satin lacquer. I'm specifically posting it so you can see how amber can lean blue toward green. I wanted it to look a bit dirty/old, but not green. If I wanted it to look more green, I'd use a green-tinted glaze. With colour - the sky's the limit if you know how to use it.
The 2nd try chocolate brown body was the one I sent the hand sample for, and they got it right after that. Their 1st attempt for the chocolate was based on photos I sent them, but it was like 15 or 20 shades darker than the darkest lit pic I gave them. Here is the finished product which I love...

The brown reminds me of a Leo Fender Music Man finish from the '70s. I think that's the only time that shade of (opaque) brown was used on a guitar. (leave it to Leo) The Fiesta Red one is pretty pink looking - Ive always gravitated to the more dusty-rose/pale salmon version but FR is also one of the colours that comes in many versions.
OMG that is really really pink! I have a friend who is 1/2 of Malekko Heavy and he is a bonafide lover of all things pink. He even had the Deckard's Dream synth made for him in pink. He even has a pink bicycle and pink sweats. He'd love that bass. I can see how if you were going for fiesta red though that isn't even in the ball park. That's just straight hot pink.

That is exactly how I felt. I had to pay shipping 3x, twice to me and 1x back and it would have been another round of there and back bringing my total expense to $500 if I hadn't contacted Matt personally. It left a bad taste in my mouth too. Overall their prices were less than Warmoth (if the job had gone right) and they had the Nitro finish that I wanted but I don't think it was worth it now. My understanding is Warmoth is now posting weights with their bodies which is an added benefit.

when I do nitro finishes here in Texas, I don’t even shoot amber tinted coats... I shoot clear, then give them anywhere from a few hours to a couple days in the Texas sun to get the desired effect...

Not for nothing, but y'all shouldn't have had to pay for shipping on their mess ups. The fiesta red and Sherwood green seem like wildly popular colors, and should be pretty easy to find an actual paint code, not left up to the painters subjective taste. Sorry for the trouble.
Wow so you are saying if I stick my bass in the sun for a few days it will turn the bass a slightly darker green? I'm in northern California where it's quite foggy but we get some sunshine here and there.

Depends on the brand of clear nitro that they shot, but I’m guessing theirs doesn’t have uv inhibitors. You could try disassembling the bass and giving the body some sun time to see. Some people also use tanning beds. Anyway, when I do mine, I attach a cardboard pickguard and bridge so that the guitar gets a “tan line” like a real vintage guitar would... finish being less yellowed under the pickguard, bridge, neck plate... more authentic.
btw... biggest reasons for all the variables in a vintage color are UV and smoke/nicotine exposure

Translucent means 'see-through' - as in EB-0 trans-cherry red. Opaque means 'solid' - not able to see through.
Here's an example of a brown MM guitar I mentioned - a '79 Sabre bass. Leo started G&L in '79, but that colour was done during his years with MM. It's hard to tell from this pic whether it is a dark translucent stain or if it is a solid colour. The bigger pic of the MM Stingray I guitar from '78 (from one of my reference books) looks to be a dark walnut stain. The guitar finish looks closer to your brown in hue.

Well, oddly enough before hearing all these negative stories, I wanted to try them as a sort of test. Like I said, I also do finishes and wanted to see their work first hand and compare notes dealing with them. So far they have been professional in our correspondence. I normally use Pat Wilkins and Marty Bell for my biz but they don’t do relic-ing/aging, which drew me to MJT. For their sake I hope they make me happy because I'll be translating my thoughts either way here on tb.
