Are you serious you have problems with the pop sound of your Stingray playing pop and slap? I don't think you'll find many people saying that. Which model, year and spec do you have? Did you buy it new? If so you have a faulty bass, string or amp! I used to get a resounding pop sound in 1980 through an Acoustic 370 with a 1 x 18 reflex cab....... Blew away P and J basses of the time - only basses like Alembics or Ibanez Musicians got near it. And that through a cab designed for thunderous lows!
I think there's a difference between the scenarios on cars you mention - I'm sure it is possible to blow the engine up on a VW if you overrev it continuously and run it without oil for long enough - but that would be the fault of the operator - as are very many problems I hear on this forum about all sorts of basses( largely unintended). There are so many variables - even people's levels of hearing are vastly different (especially those playing in bands) - those with hearing loss often hear only the bassiest notes properly. This is like saying I had a puncture in a car with, say Michelin tyres - three other people pipe up with the same issue - and then suggest there's a problem with Michelin tyres. The reason I'm so passionate about it is I know there have been people banned from the EB forum on this board who have made mischief, I know there are people who have played my basses and sounded awful but it was because they were, frankly limited players, some with a slightly enlarged view of their skill (especially guitarists standing in on jam sessions) and if you use your equipment skilfully the problem doesn't occur, period. Last week a shred guitarist played one of my Stingrays in a jam session - he said it sounded boomy - in the room it had a Tim Commerford sound - no sign of boominess - not sure what he expected but the sound was good - playing was ok.
I once agreed to take half of my Ashdown ABM stack to a jam session - everyone sounded great through it except for someone who got up with a £100 or less copy P bass, a very bad one - frankly played extremely badly, and then promptly told me my stack was no good!!!
These are the problems I have with threads like this [emoji4] I've asked people to post their sound samples and until I hear them I won't be convinced in the slightest. Listen to Ed Friedland's review and develop a balanced view.
Or stop moaning, sell your bass and move on to something else.
