mod a squier or just buy a fender??

I've been playing bass for about a year now. I've been using a seventies ibanez p bass that my dad used as a kid and handed down to me when i picked bass up. Now im thinking about finally buying my own bass. :D I'm looking at basses in the 250$ to 500$ range (i know its pretty broad).
My options are

1) squier affinity series precision bass (probably going to be outfitted with seymour duncan quarter pounders and maybe a new bridge)

2) squier classic vibe precision 60's bass

3) squier vintage modified precision bass (same mods as the affinity)

4) MIM fender precision bass

i haven't played many basses but i've played a decent amount and from playing the seventies ibanez precision bass, a jazz bass my brother has and many basses in stores and that my relatives own im pretty sure that i want a precision bass but im still open to suggestions.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified series'. The ones I've played have been pretty good, but you should definitely be sure you try before you buy to make sure you don't get a lemon.

yup i researched it a while back and mine is one of the lawsuit era basses. I do like it alot i just wanted to get one of my own as well.

i guess its more out of want than need if you know what i mean

Both ways you go you're in good shape . The Vintage Mod Squiers are great for the cash . Especially the Pbass . Get a Squier P bass Vintage Modified and swop out the pots and pickup and you'll have a killer bass. Heck , even stock they're good .
Or get a used MIM and mod the crap out of that .

Whatever you do though as stated already : Try before you buy.

For $300 you can buy a "like new" MIM Fender that is only 1 or 2 years old. It will always be worth what you paid for it if you keep it in good condition. For $200 you can buy a nice used bass amp of sufficient power and size that will make your playing enjoyable. I am very much against buying new. Everything new depreciates horribly the minute you buy it.

True, unless you buy new for a used price. Then you can sell it for at least what you paid for it.

I wouldn't just automatically assume mods are necessary. I've changed out pickups on inexpensive basses with some "high end" pickups only to find out that the original pickup sounded just as good or better. If you can play before you buy, why not just keep playing stuff until you find the one that suits you as it is? If you have to buy without seeing first, that makes it harder, of course.

CV is my first choice since for the money they are killer basses. VM are nice too but i dont like the neck finish as well but you might...still a great bass. MIM unless its used is too much money new. If you get a used MIM for say $250 or under than you are good to go. Afinity standard Squiers are decent but need tooo much help to get up to a CV, MIM or VM so buy one of them and be done with it. A dont think a CV or VM really need mods too much but that me.
