Modding a MIM Dinrt P-Bass to a PJ?

So I an thinking of getting a MIM Mike Dirnt P-Bass and modding it into a PJ bass with stacked Vol/Tone knobs.

Would this work well on this bass? The stock pickups are supposed to be Fender Custom Shop P-Bass pick up. Would it work to put a Fender Custom shop bridge j pup in it or do you have to have specific PJ pickup pairs?

you could always look at the schecter robert deleo model T bass, its basically a 51 type p with a pj setup.

I really want the true Fender Neck.
I am after the Tele bass for looks more than anything anyway.

Plus it would be much easier to find a Dirnt P-Bass used and for realtively cheap.

First I know where you can get a dirnt in good shape for 300$ plus shipping.

I ended up parting one out a month ago on the forums due to weight.

Also you can find a pickup to match it well, fender custom shop 60's J is probably what I would go with as I love those pickups.

I don't know if its easy or how to do it, but I'd be all over it. The deleo bass is really cool too, but the Dirnt has something going for it that I really like (headstock may be a factor ) If you end up doing this, I demand a full review.

Vintage Vibe Alnico 5 based 51 style pickup, split coils for humbucking.

Controls are Vol/Vol. I'm not feeling the need for a tone control. The Split P is pretty wooly on it's own, rolling in the bridge pickup get's me some edge. It's very mich like the G&L SB-2.

Aesthetically, the 51 style made more sense to me than a J on this particular bass. Left to do is to paint the new cavity black and to rout a truss rod access cavity. I think I'm staying 'guardless on this one...

Don't do it.

It's just a bad call. P/J passives are a flawed concept due to the differential in pickup output even if this was an easy mod, which it's not. You have to start from scratch with a matched set, which will sound inadequate as either a P or a J in most cases. Fender never even got it right.

It's always a mistake to buy a bass you know is very different from what you want with the intention of making it into something it's not.

I say do it. Modding is what Fenders are for. Even if you don't find exactly what you want from your mod, it won't be long until another idea comes along to either fix it or go a completely new direction.

Creativity is a process and nothing original ever happened by just accepting the status quo.

Glad you got it...That was a killer deal.

I think I am going to save to a Atkinson P/J '51 tele custom.
