Kind of talking things out loud, and who better to bounce off than the wealth of knowledge known as TB 
I have a 76 P, that had its finish stripped and a J pup added to the bridge. Good sound, the j pup does not have the output to match the p pup. That said, the body is some heavy ash, and the neck is all maple and has been shaved down and feels GREAT. got it off ebay that way from a retired pro, and one of the best soudning and playing basses I have, except its a 4 string Anyways.....
looking for a jazz in the ash maple combo, I can hear an awesome slap tone in there, but don't like the p slap tone at all. I thought about somehow doing the Stu Hamm Urge thing to this, namely adding a j neck pup adn maybe a pre. So, why a pre? Well, that is what I need to ask.
First, is the usual p placement where the neck j should be? Also, more than one tech said passively, a p on 8 is about the same volume as a J on 10. what I'd like to do is have a way to switch from the j neck pup and the p pup, and be able to add the j bridge pup independently, and only run the j pups through a pre. granted some crazy wiring, but its either that or find some j pups that have real hot output.
Any thoughts? Modding this p means nothing valuewise since it is way modded as is.
