modding an ampeg ba115

I want to put a 10 or 12 inch speaker in my ba115 instead of the 15 thats in there. And im not sure what to go with. Also whats the difference between neodyium magnets? I noticed that they were alot lighter so thats a plus but they probably also have an effect on the tone. So My plan was to get some plywood and cut a ring to fill the extra space so I can fit eather the 10 or 12. Is that possible? Also whats advantages would a 12 have?

i wouldn't change the speaker size. you would have better luck trying a different 15 - i'm sure their is room for improvement over the stock speaker. if you really want to go to a different size speaker, sell your amp and get something else, but don't butcher it.

I just dont like how boomy the 15 sounds. Are there other 15s out there that sound tighter and more defined? And what would the difference be with a neo speaker? Most replacement speakers that are 15s are 8 ohm would that make any difference? And the handling is 300 watts and higher. Is that bad that the handling is way more then that the preamp is putting out?

Get a different amp. Trying to find a better speaker to correctly match the tuning of your cabinet is a pretty risky effort. It could be a complete waste of money and not sound as good as what you have in there now.

This question gets asked a couple times a week and gets the same answers. It's been going on for years.

I have had it for years it was sitting around for 2 but then when my ashdown mag300 blew,(not my fault It worked fine the night before and left it at my guitarists house and the next day I plugged in and it started smoking, I know the guitarist messed with it i found what looked like a paperclip inside it.) I went back to the ba115. I liked it when I bought it I didnt know anybetter at the time. I miss that ashdown so much so maybe instead of trying to change the speaker in the ba115 ill go shopping for a new head. I am just wondering about ohms though whats the difference between 4 and 8?

replace the speaker with the same ohm rating, i just looked at the manual and it states 100 watts at 4ohms. Since it does not have a extension speaker jack then I would surmise that it has a 4 ohm speaker in it. I you put in an 8 ohm then you will in essence have approximately a 70 watt amp.

this might work but I would see if some of the speaker experts who know WinISD software might chime in on your project. It is important to match a speaker to a cab. Dimensions of a cab and its ports dictate the speaker that you use.

The basslites look like they work pretty well in a smallerish cab. Some adjustment of the tuning port may be needed though. I'd look at the LegendCB15 as well. Measure the inside of your cab and compare that to the suggestions on eminence's site. Patching up the baffle and changing to a 12 would probably make the combo sound deeper as you'd then be closer to an ideal box size for the smaller speaker. Most commercially available cabs/combo's seem too small for the drivers in them.

The Legend has a little dip in the mids and not quite as much of a spike on the top end. That could mean warmth or mud depending on your ear. The basslite doesn't have the little mid dip and a bigger spike on top. That could mean clean and clear or bright and lacking bottom depending on your ear.

The response graphs are in the PDF spec sheets for both. I'm sure the are a few guys here who have legends in their rigs and some may have experience with basslite too. The Kappalite3015 (not the LF version) might be a better choice than either of those.

The legend probably would closest to the stock ampeg that's in there now.

Do they make a kappalite in 4 ohms? On the eminence site they said it was rated at 8. I hate the speaker thats in there so that probably makes me want to stay away from the legend. I like the fact that the neo speakers are lighter. I pulled the speaker that was in there today and it weighed about 20 to 25 pounds. Are there any other benifits to neo magnets in speakers?
