Modding my SX

I have a question about swapping bridges. Anyone do it and what differences did it make? I'm looking at the Gotoh and BAII. I got the $89 Jazz, putting a P p'up in the warmouth black tort pickguard, and a fretless neck.

I've swapped bridges on a couple basses and do not find much of a sound difference except when replacing a bridge with loose springs on the saddles. They do look nicer and it's nice to have slots for the saddles to move back and forth in, but as far as sound goes I don't think it actually does that much IME. People will argue forever about that though.

I put a chrome Schaller roller bridge on my modded SX Jazz. It looks a hell of a lot better, and offers great adjustability to deal with the sometimes misaligned pickup posts. To my ears, bridges make very little difference, tonally speaking. I buy bridges based on aesthetics and adjustability, with the Hipshot A being my personal favorite.

Unless you are swapping a bad sounding bridge for a new one, I doubt you will be able to tell much. The key is understanding why the old bridge sounds bad, and correcting it.

If you're modding for the sake of modding, then just do it.

Switching to a body through bridge would probably make the biggest tonal difference. But then again, bridges create sustain. So swapping a fender stock bridge for a badass may make more of a difference than you'd think.

IMHO and experience the differences in tone or sustain between various bridges is minimal at best. When listening to recordings or seeing bands play live I have never been able to distinguish whether or not the bass player was using a cheap pressed steel or more expensive high-mass bridge... nor have I met anyone who could either.

However YMMV as it apparently does with people who swear by high-mass bridges... to each his/her own.

if i am building a bass i'll drop the coin for a goth 201 if i buy a MIA fender for example i am not changing the bridge on an sx ehh idk i would give it a go for awhile stock

I just put a hipshot vintage bent bridge on an SX P-bass. Matches up no problem at all. Looks great... of course I'm covering it up with a P-bass size Bridge cover, but I know it's there.
