Modified Stingray, stock preamp and pickup

Here is a video showing a Stingray with series/parallel/split coil mod's using the stock 2-wire pickup. Sounds absolutely amazing! I want to do this.

Anyone have a schematic to do this with the stock 2-wire pickup? I can do it with a Duncan-style 4-wire easily, but I'd like to retain the original.

some nice sounds there. I liked the bridge coil on its own.

I suspect the pickup looks like this:

That's my SUB5 alnico/parallel original pickup. I just happened to have a picture of it and didn't feel like opening the Stingray ;)
The individual wires can be snipped and spliced and you get your usual 4-wire situation.

I got the diagram from the guy who made the video, and did the mod.

It's sort of 'not for the faint of heart' in a way, but it can all be easily undone. The only things that can't be undone are the holes int he control plate for the switches.

First, start by removing the pickup and unsoldering the 'parallel' leads:

and then elongate the red and green wires, in essence making it a 4-wire pickup like all the aftermarket MM pups:

and then wire up the pickup to the switches (which necessitates unsoldering the black and white from the preamp module and re-soldering)

of course you have to drill holes int he control plate for the simple SPDT switches.

in all, took me about 2 hours and it sounds great. Series actually kind of sounds like Flea's Wal tone on Blood-Sugar...

PM me if you want the diagram

Do you had any problems with hum or noise by touching the poles? I made the mod and it began making this damn noise in neck coil and series position. I can't find anything to solve this... It's driving me nuts!

its going to hum to a certain degree because hum canceling is gone in single and series mode. some pickups hum worse than others depending on environment, amp, and AC line noise. you can start by grounding the pole pieces. when I did that the hum is barely audible. I did the same mod to a Stingray copy

If it's humming whenever you touch the poles, the polepieces aren't properly grounded. Make sure the polepieces aren't connected to either of the leads of the pickups - instead, put a layer of self-adhesive copper tape on the polepieces from below, and run a wire from that to the sleeve (central) contact of the output jack. This will make sure series mode works normally, and single-mode should be quieter as well.
