Modifying an ATK

Thanks Sean. I'll forward this to my son. We have heard several other ATKs compared to his, and his is "darker" than any other I've heard. His bass mentor agrees. We've tried new strings and a new battery. It's just an interesting character to this particular bass.

Whoa... I would definitely not touch that ATK with any ideas of ostensibly "improving" it via mods... I didn't even realize that Paul used one in Tool but the tone is certainly right in line.

Swapping preamps is fairly painless and fully recoverable. Routing for pickups is not.

Paul used an ATK just after utilizing a Chris Squier signature Rick for the first two albums. In fact, a quick Google would give you some more info: I believe he used his ATK for part of Undertow, and certainly on the tour that followed

Easy explanation for this.... because he didnt. (not in Tool anyways. Maybe after he left the band)

List of basses used live and or in the studio

1979 Ovation Magnum 1
-used on the 2 live tracks on Opiate
-used in early touring

Late 80's/Early 90's Ric 4001
-Black and white/cream one with the edge binding
-used in early touring

CS Ric 4001 signature
-Used in studio for rest of Opiate album
-Entire Undertow album
-Used live for about 3/4 of the Undertow tour

Early 90's EBMM StingRay 4
-Used live after dropping the CS Ric

I traded in my ATK750Koa for a Sterling RAY34CA last week. Loved the bass but it was just too heavy. Should have considered finding somebody to chamber the body or something. A near miss of a bass. Great tone, nice neck, lovely looks, just too heavy for this ol' dog.

If your son really wants to mod his atk700 and get the tool bass tone, preamp and practice will make it better. not a new route for pickups.
