Modtone Bass XL Preamp and Compressor Effects Pedal

I was wondering if anyone has used the modtone bass xl Preamp and Compressor Effects Pedal with their other pedals as a working compressor. I frequently need compression on my distortion pedal and would like to have the option of a DI in live gigs. My Ampeg does not have XLR direct out so it would be useful.
I am mostly curious if this pedal would be good as dual purpose pedal and as a compression. There is very little out there about this pedal and I have been disappointed with Modtone in the past. I am willing to give it another chance.

I've only found one YouTube demo of this pedal and it's pretty much a garbage demo.


Has anybody been able to try one out?
Does anybody have any experience with ModTone in general?
Are they a cheapo pedal company or is their stuff well built?

I'm in the market for a preamp with compression and I've been eyeing the TC Electronic SpectraDrive, the EHX Batallion and the LR Baggs Stadium Bass when I came across this pedal form ModTone so I'm trying to revive this old thread.

So I've have this pedal for roughly a year. After doing some recent research on it, I stumbled across this thread again. Here's my analysis. I am unable to give any sound sample since my interface died for whatever reason. I hope this helps. I also got it off reverb for $80. So I wouldnt pay the money other dealers ask for (~$160)

The pedal, for what I got for it, is pretty good. It's not Tech 21 good, but it gets the job done

The 3 band eq with sweepable mid works just fine. It's not as responsive as I'd like it to be. But the frequencies you manipulate are noticable. There is some noise, but it about as average as a preamp can have.

The compressor, well, it's there. The compressor is definitely lacking. Again, it works, but it feels like its missing something. The threshold and compression knobs do give flexibility however.

The di is very handy. That's all I gotta say about that.

The headphone jack and aux in is as good as any. This was essential to silent practice since my house is always full with at least one person alseep during the day.

All in all, for $80, it's pretty worth it. I've used it for recording and for live music. It gets the job done and sounds good. If you're on a budget and can get it for a similar price, go for it. However, it is not worth 160 or whatever on Musicians Friend
