I have been on a quest to find a proper Modulus case for my Bassstar. I have it currently in a SKB standard P-bass case and the body part is way to big. My bass kind of slops around in it. Anyone have any ideas

just scored a bassstar neck for a new project 
My question, has the serial number dating been figured out yet? Mine has this number at the heel, it's hard to see but I think 0185?

I am not sure if anyone can let us know about serial numbers on these. Mine does not have on. I always thought the general rule about them applies, but a 4 digit, hmm. I wish someone would be able to find out. These bassstar components seem to be an on going mystery.. Oh and that first number in the picture looks like a 9
first number could be a nine, this pic is how it looks as it's quite blurry and hard to read but I'd love to know the year.
I got that franken-bassstar off ebay few weeks ago with the Fender jazz body, mainly got it for the neck and I'll use the bartolinis, but the rest I'm piecing together my build masterpiece

Was there ever such a thing? I bought my Modulus new in 1988 (ordered it directly from Geoff Gould, he had to actually set up a dealer in my area before he could deliver it!) and it came with as generic a plywood HSC as any I've ever seen. Looked like the same black vinyl-covered rectangle as any Fender or Ibanez or Yamaha would come with at the time, definitely didn't say "Modulus Graphite" on it or have any features or distinguishing characteristics that would set it apart as unique. To this day I have used that same case for at least a half dozen different basses from different manufacturers, and they all fit
...or, now that I think about it, perhaps I don't still have that original case "to this day", I may have sold it off with one of the Fender or Peavey or V-C basses I parted with...it was so anonymously generic that I'm not sure if the black rectanglar HSC my Modulus currently lives in is the original!
It is very possible that back then they used generic cases. I don't know. However my SKB-44 generic P-bass case does fit my Bassstar.
I found another TB'er that has a Bassstar original case. He no longer has the Bassstar, but keeps his Alembic Epic in it. I am hoping he may let it loose for one of my extra cases. It would be very nice indeed.
Did anyone see this one? 4 string neck through with Fender Headstock.. No Date, No Serial number, but it does have the Patent number... If it weren't fretless I would own this sucker in a heartbeat!! I have way to many fretless basses (Including 2 Modulus')

So, I am finding out more about my Bassstar. The nut width is 1-3/4" and the heel at the 24th fret is only 2-1/2" Very slim taper. Also, the inset wood above the neck threw in the body is Honduran Mahogany and the wings are Painted Poplar (it gives it that black kind of look). Also, it is a 34" scale. Don't know if I mentioned that before or not.
when it comes to Modulus Fender-style necks, are the old Bassstars considered to be more valuable/sought after versus the newer KLD (Thousand Ladies Dancing) necks?
seems like the Bassstar necks with the traditional carbon fiber weave always draw more attention and often fetch more money online.
while the more recent Modulus necks of KLD design don't seem to excite everyone, even though they appear to be much more solid.

I think with Modulus going out of business, the whole market for Mod basses and necks are just going crazy right now. Personally, I don't care either way about the KLD or whatever. If I like the bass, then I like the bass as a whole. My Bassstar is a super rare neck thru and has very little patterning. My Genesis basses and my VJ basses are completely different animals and my other Mod's I have I do because I like the bass. Just my humble opinion though
here's my Modulus Bassstar P-Bass. she's a mutt i purchased a couple of years ago on ebay that's nearly unchanged as i found her.
the alder body (originally made by Fender) was sent off to MJT Finishes in Missouri for a complete stripping and BRILLIANT re-finishing in a vintage, worn Fiesta Red. MJT Finishes were a PLEASURE to work with and do absolutely incredible work. these photos don't do them justice! lots of fine, miniscule crackling on the finish. VERY RETRO! i can't say enough positive things about the folks at MJT Finishes... brilliant, brilliant, BRILLIANT!
the neck is an early Modulus Bassstar from the early 1980s. i don't have a photo of the serial number stamped on the heel, but Joe Perman of Modulus confirmed the age. the neck measures 1.5 inches at the nut, which is made of graphite. the neck is in purely excellent condition, especially considering its age.
the pickup is a Nordstrand NP4, complete with their trademark "N" on the cover. this is my first Nordstrand experience and i'm super-impressed. additionally, their customer service ROCKS. nice folks over there at Nordstrand. ain't it nice when a manufacturer actually e-mails you back? (those of you who don't -- shame on you! you know who you are!)
modern Schaller tuners and a stock Fender bridge complete this one.
this one is one of my all-time faves in my collection... excellent, true tone... super-comfortable to play... lightweight... tracks extremely well. it's like an old, familiar pair of sneakers only in the form of a Modulus Precision
