Sterile is a fair judgement ..... Like noted earlier its kind of an all in or not
"dead" is bad strings, touch, setup and signal chain .... When achieved in harmony it's total bliss ..... I have a long list of basses on my gear list .... The only ones I get call backs from are graphites and millenium for sound... And seven string for looks
I own a few graphites- wouldn't describe as sticky ---- import basses are sticky
I don't mean dead as in dead strings or a bad setup. Just... I don't know... No flavor to it at all. I wouldn't call it sterile, but then again, everyone have their own idea of what these words really mean.
I might have exaggerated a bit, I did enjoy both the Modulus Q5 and the Stingray for a long while, but they didn't stick with me.
Funny you should mention that. I always though older Stingrays and some Modulus have a kinid of bite in the upper mids. Not so much a bump in frequency bit more as a kind of resonance .I own and owned the following
-Stingrays
-Stingrays with a Status neck
-Modulus FU basses
I could go ect but I try to be brief
The Modulus has have a certain slight upper midrange that my ears always here on ANY modulus, I'm sure others here it as well...Its a little hard to describe other then what I said.
The Status is a lot like Modulus but that upper mid bump its not so prominent but it still has all that graphite clarity with no loss of foundation. It works well with Stingrays.
The Stingray (stock anyways) will have that stock pickup and pre sound that a Modulus will not. Kind of that signature thing that do have.

Bottom line all are great basses...I think someone said if you want the best of both worlds get a Ray with a Status neck and I agree with that.
I'm a big fan of graphite and I would go with one of those options.
