Modulus vs. Elrick

Hey be easy with the name calling!

I have spoken to Rob many a times with no problem's at all. He has answered all my E-mails in a timely matter. I have never had a problem with him.

Now Modulus on the other hand............Forget about it......They never answer emails in a timely fashion (that's if you actually get a response)

Bass for bass...........Elrick all the way! Construction, Tone, Quality, ...Rob builds some great basses.

OOHH.......and by the way (since no one else brought this up)...Modulus does not offer a Genesis 5 with 19MM spacing. It is only available with 17MM.

I've heard about Rob's attitude, both good and bad, but could care less, it's all a matter of perception. People consider me somewhat arrogant, but truth be known, I'm shy and suck at small talk.

He builds an awesome instrument and that's the bottom line, it's not a personality contest.

Boogie, another PM back at you.

Rob Elrick makes some of the finest basses available today.

Commenting on his personal character, I think the jerkoff comment comes from people who don't jive with his personality...he's a very dry, funny guy. Opinionated, too. But, not as opinionated as say..Ed Roman :p

End summation: Rob is a cool, funny guy who makes a mean bass.

I called him to ask him some questions about my NJS that I had just purchased from Bass NW, and he started ranting and raving about how he's never put Aero's in a bass or the Demeter pre, and he only uses bartolini because everything else sucks (hey, there's that opinionated thing).

And then I saw pictures of the bass in his booth at namm.

It's not a big deal and he wasn't a jerkoff, but he certainly wasn't the least bit personal, humorous, or helpful. But everyone has bad days.

Regardless of the man, the basses are top notch. All geniuses are eccentric, right? :)
(although mike tobias and roger sadowsky are two of the nicest men i've ever talked with)

My first contact with Rob was in reference to a problem I had with the semihollowbody fretless NJS 5 I had just gotten from the original owner. We spent over an hour on the phone and he carried most of the conversation. I found him to be outgoing, opinionated (in a good way), very easy to talk to and generally an all around cool guy. Nothing even close to "jerkoff" IMO IME.

I know he doesn't post an email address and calls go through Tom Wagner so maybe that's part of the negative vibe. I can understand it, AFAIK it's a one man operation and email can be very time-consuming.

Elrick's used prices are something that really has me puzzled. You can get an amazing bass used for well under $2,000. I think they're worth more, especially compared to most of the competition. I have three flat-out amazing Elricks, they have to be played to be believed;)

Sounds like he doesn't like Aeros;)

Whoa! I originally did a search of terms pertaining to Elrick and Modulus basses. The keyword "Elrick" yielded 53 pages of posts on the basses (most all were positive) and the man (many negative experiences). Check my original post, the perceived "name calling" was in reference to others' posted opinions of him. Anyways, From what I understand, Elrick basses have a standard 3" wide neck, which yields a 3/4" or 19mm spacing (like a four string). According to specs, these basses are also VERY light. Modulus, on the other hand, offers the Quantum, which has a 2.75" standard neck which is 5/8" or 17mm. BUT, there is a WIDE neck Quantum which is a six string neck with a 5 string nut 3.25" or 22mm spacing. Seeing how I am not SHAQ, I then looked into their GENESIS line, which has a standard 3" neck and 19mm spacing like the Elrick. At this point, based on the posts, I am definitely leaning toward an Elrick!

I'd like to echo what dragonbass stated above regarding Modulus' general lack of customer service. I bought a Modulus Quantum six-string in 1994. Over the years, I've called and emailed Modulus a few times. Their response was usually not timely or I might simply not receive a response at all. Very recently, my luthier called Modulus to obtain a nut blank for my bass. Not only did they not return his calls in a timely manner, but when he did get the nut blank ordered, they took about two weeks to mail the little piece out. I recently bought an MTD Kingston, and have already been impressed with Mike Tobias' fantastic customer service (I called regarding a different colored pickguard), and this on his lowest-priced bass! I love the playability and sound of my Quantum, but will go with another manufacturer next time.

who said you have3 to have a modulus OR an Elrick. for 2-G I can think of alot of great gear I could have with change left over.
BTW, I ahve a Modulus Vintage J-4 Special Edition and Every time I've written to Modulus, I've recieved e-mail response within a 48 hr. time frame. I havent needed any parts, so i don't know about that.

Just an observation.

It might be that he's tired of answering repeted wank questions. you know it happens.

LOL! I was on the Alt guitar.bass and somebody posted saying: something like: "Which would you rather play/own? A Rickenbacker/ or a Kinal?"

I numbly replied: "I own a RIC, why should I want to play a Kinal?"

Man! the dood came unglued! He proceeded to tell me that I had no "taste" and/or "class" (now, he may be right about that!)and that he was friends with Kinal (ah-HAH!) and lived not far fromt he factory (uh-huh) thought I was an obnoxious arrogant A-hole, and kept ranting.

Anyway, to get back on subject, I never could understand that with that kind of money, one would be settled on seemingly only 2 brands.

Man there's a bunch of great stuff out there!

Tim

Dragonbass stated above that "OOHH.......and by the way (since no one else brought this up)...Modulus does not offer a Genesis 5 with 19MM spacing. It is only available with 17MM."

I'm pretty sure that the reverse is actually true and that the Genesis 5 string only comes in a 19mm (fairly wide at 3/4 inches) string spacing. Perhaps one can be special ordered with a smaller string spacing?

I was very impressed with a Gen 5 about a year ago that I saw in a store and looked up the info... pretty sure about the string spacing.

Later,

Glen

When I called about a pre amp question on my GS 5, I spoke to somebody (not Rob) who was very friendly and helpful.
As far as "nice (and talented) luthiers", Carey Nordstrand is it. If your considering Elrick, you should check out Carey's work.

And Mike Tobias and Kevin Brubaker and Rob Elrick and Chris Stambaugh and Roger Sadowsky and Vinnie and Joey and...

My point is I've only had nice experiences with every luthier "I" have ever dealt with. It can happen:D

True, and the high end market is vey much a buyer's market where a little negative attitude or bad PR by one of these luthers can cause a lot of damage.
