Been a while since I bought something new before anyone else.

I decided to take a punt as I've always been impressed with the Mojo Hand stuff and the Huckleberry has pretty much been my fav fuzz since it came out 4-5 years ago

So for those who don't know this is a Big Muff variant, so nothing ground breaking but what really is these days with a fuzz. For me it's an interesting experiment because I've always been stuck in the Fuzz Face camp to the point where I own a GE Fuzz Face, a Silicon Fuzz Face and a Hybrid Ge/Si Fuzz Face and have pretty much hated every muff variant I've tried.

Blurb from the manufacturer
ALL HAIL THE COLOSSUS!!! Just unleashed on an unsuspecting public, the Colossus is THE be all end all Russian/Civil War Muff style fuzz. Ridiculously tweakable, insanely versatile, and packed with 10 tons of Colossal Mojo. Rich harmonic drenched chords, sweet singing leads, sludgy stoner goodness, filthy bluesy mcnasties, Pumpkin flavored raunch...you name it, it do it. It features a 3 way toggle for different EQ voicings, as well as a full range "Mids" control to help you cut through the mix in a live setting. As with all Mojo Hand pedals, the Colossus comes standard equipped in die cast enclosure, features true bypass switching, and can run off a standard 9v adapter or battery.

So it arrived today, usual fast delivery. I got mine in silver because I thought it would look best next to the Sparkly purple huck. It came with a purple LED which was a nice touch. Case is a bit odd, same size as the Huckleberry which is this taller, longer and wider than a standard MXR box but then the jacks are on the side instead of the top like you would expect, no big deal for me but I know this can be a deal breaker for some.

Build quality is everything you come to expect from a pro boutique pedal builder.

Sound, well I've not hammered it for hours yet but I have had a good experiment with it. Tis flat out awesome, I mean I've always loved the Huck but its really something you have to find the sweet spot of. The Colossus just has a massive low end particuarly with the switch in the down position, I started off with the gain off and vol at unity and it was a great tone shaper, little bit gritty but not fuzz gritty much more CPD style/sound.

Plenty of gain and volume on tap with the tone and mids providing a wide range of tones but with the tone rolled back you get quite a nice blended fuzz tone, the low end is just always so present no matter what you do, short of cranking the gain, tone and mids (gets a little thinner hear but its more of an over emphasis on the "we sound crap on bass frequencies")

Best way I can put it, is it's like Mojo Hand finally made a bass fuzz and listened to everything I wanted.

Also plays nice with active basses.

So these are my initial findings, I'll post more as I play over the weekend and I will do my best to get a soundclip done.

Enjoy

Got my Colossus about 3 weeks ago... still not very excited with its sound :ninja:
Compared it with my Dwarfcraft ECT, Black arts Pharaoh, Malekko Assmaster, Russian black muff PI and Fuzzrocious Dark driving (yes, it's an overdrive pedal, but on maximum gain it gives near fuzz sonds). Colossus is very solid built pedal, but still can not find settings that I love.
Maybe that's because I expected much more due to super cool design ;)
Anyway, can't wait to listen it in the mix to make final decision. :bassist:
upd and Colossus doesn't work with wah at all. that's a pity

I like pedals that don't sit in a mix,

so...:ninja: would be right up my alley.

(my alley being taking it off your hands)

Putting trying to get an expensive pedal for cheap to one side for a moment...

There are so many high quality MUFF variants (wren and cuff, blackout effectors, mojo hand(has two), way huge etc etc) that it is almost mind boggling. I almost just feel like going with the one with the coolest paintjob.

That's a shame - I really liked the demos I heard and was thinking of getting one.

What doesn't it do for you and what doesn't happen with wah?
Without doubt it's very smooth and 100% muffish, and Colossus has much more low end than my Sovtek black muff, but the sound is too compressed for me.
I played it with MXR 105q, but effect was not pronounced. No 'wah wah', just hum changing to hissing on major settings, so wah is completely inaudible on higher gain. My other fuzz and drive stompboxes give very good audible frequency sweep with 105q on any gain.
I'll try some more tweaking with Colossus. I really want to like it, it'll be useful to have such small fuzz stombox

I agree the sustain might not be as nasty as the black Russian at first(which is why it might sound so compressed), but fiddling with the mids along with the gain will definitely open up the sound. As for the wah, with my Jazz and Stingray it's perfect, complete fluid sound with the Colossus; I love using the switch in the top position to get maximum low end even with the wah fully rocked. However, playing around with a Precision I do notice it "skips" the mid sound and goes right to screaming treble (like what you're describing).

What kind of bass are you using? IME, precision pickups aren't the best when using the fuzz/wah combo. I also find that to get the best settings with the Colossus, you have to set your amp at flat then go for the settings on the pedal. It really is the ultimate combo of every muff. It's got the smooth, lead like sound of my Civil War and the deep, angrier sounds of the green and black. I use it over any other muff variant out there, it kills the Musket IMO...

pretty old Rick 4003 + Orange ad200b (always flat settings, all frequencies on 6 o'clock - thats kick ass without any tweaking). With other fuzzes and drives it's cool played with wah, I can get sounds from Electric Wizard's 'Ivixor B / Phase Inducer' psychedelia to near synth cold and mechanic effect.
Hmm.. I've got my friend's a US-made Spector with humbucker pups, I'll give it a try with wah and Colossus. Nevertheless, I'm not a fan of active pups

Hello folks.

I recently picked up a Colossus from Reverb and I'm wondering whether the unit I have is faulty. The mids control appears to be completely unresponsive no matter the setting, whereas everything else is working fine and has a notable effect on the overall tone. I'm on the verge of contacting the seller about the issue and took the time to record a quick video so he can hear what I'm talking about (I used my guitar board setup as I figured that would be the most comprehensive demonstration), but I thought it best to show it here to just make sure my ears are not deceiving me. As far as I can tell the mids control is either subtle to the point of it becoming non-existent, or it's simply not working on this particular unit.

If anyone has experience using the Colossus and can offer some insight I'd very much appreciate it!
