I think they would be worth trying, but while these days I try not to be a spec-whore due to the ridiculous bickering I see on the internet about things you can't really hear, the specs on those are pretty lacking, mainly power and sensitivity. Monitors don't need to be obscenely loud, but generally need to be "loud enough". at least 30 watts per channel I would think? Though I am curious if anyone has tried them. If you are in the market for a pair of cheap monitor, there's nothing wrong with a used pair of behringer truth or m-audios in my mind.

Thanks Amos. I'm dealing with limited space, so the 3" ones seemed like the could be a good compromise. Probably won't order anything, just wondering if they were junk or not.

NP. FWIW, possibly the best affordable small monitors around are the Equator D5s which also have possibly the smallest footprint for a 5" monitor. They had an introductory price of $299 direct and are now $399. I would try to find a second-hand pair on eBay (tricky) if I were in the market.

But I've recently come to the conclusion that for me personally I need to be able to justify a purchase given my current needs, pretty much anything over $300 is difficult right now.

i bought the rockit 5s from gc, because they tricked me and told me that they were made in long beach, ca, anyway they are usually at or below $140 a speaker and they work great/very well with the drum machine and the bass

the best cheapie thing i had used was a computer setup by creative which worked great for laptop speakers and listening to music during art installs

I use D5's and they're wonderful. They feel like a more accurate NS10. To be fair, NS10's are not intended to be accurate, but rather hyped to highlight problem spots in the midrange. If you can find a deal on some D5's, grab them. You won't be disappointed.

I'm not sure you can really reproduce the dynamics and harmonics of a song accurately with a three inch driver but they make headphones that cost 10x as much and produce authentic sounds so why not. $75 for the pair - can't really go wrong. However, if you can come up with another 325 you can buy the D5's which are by far the best monitors out there.

Thanks for the site though, just purchased a few cables I needed at killer prices.

Having heard the D5s, I would still pay $400 for them, as I would feel totally comfortable mixing a record on them. Genelecs are great and everything, but if a $400 pair of amazing coaxials gets the job done, why bother with monitors 3-4x the price? I feel like Equator is kind of the Avatar/Carvin of the studio monitor market right now, they are selling a ton, and rightly so. With gear prices on a lot of stuff about 30% higher than when I first started buying expensive crap a decade a go, it's really nice to still see high-end stuff that low-figure earners like myself can afford.
