Moog Moogerfooger Ring Modulator

I have 500 dollars to spend for Christmas and I want to add some good stuff to my bass arsenal but I want to keep it simple. Would a Moog Ring Modulator be very useful or is it one of those pedals that sounds really cool but is not very practical when it comes to actually using it in a band situation? The reason I looked into one is because both Omar and Juan of The Mars Volta use one and Omar used one when he played bass for De Facto. I play in a band and we play mostly progressive rock influenced by The Mars Volta. I just don't want to spend 275 dollars on a pedal that I won't be able to use on stage with my band.

Tell me everything I need to know about using a Moog Ring Modulator and Moog expression pedal with my bass. Or would a Moog Low Pass Filter be more useful than their Ring Mod?

I play a Fender Standard Jazz through a Ampeg B2RE and Ampeg SVT410HLF.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

The clips on their site typically show the pedal at it's extreme. I own a moog ring mod and love it...whether you want to create some wild over the top sounds or just create subtle hamonic/synthey or tremolo sounds underneath your playing it's a very versatile pedal. You probably wont use it on every song but once you figure out it's full range you'll love it.

As far as ring mods go, not all of them can run the full gamut from subtle to crazy, but the Moog is one of them. It will most definitely take some time to figure out right and your band members may need to be a little patient -- there are a lot of variables with this pedal. If you can, try it before you buy it, but this seems like a great pedal.
