Moog Sub Phatty (setup/acquisition)

Hi,

I'm interested in getting a midi keyboard that I can use at home for recording, and for performance purposes. 2 questions:

1. Anyone know where I could look to find a decent used Sub Phatty?

2. I'm not a techie; any advice on where someone new to this kind of gear can look to find out more about setups for live shows?

(Actually, I had thought that the Sub Phatty could also approximate a "clean" keyboard-y sound, but that doesn't seem accurate. Any advice on if I want some of what the Phatty can do with keyboard capabilities, for not too much dough?)

What exactly do you mean by a "'clean' keyboard-y sound"? The Sub Phatty can do a more or less pure triangle wave, which is pretty much as 'clean' as it gets when it comes to synths. I haven't done any MIDI, but for performance as a synth, the Phatties (I have a Little Phatty) are as plug-and-play as it gets.

By clean I mean non-distorted; can it simulate piano-like tones? Part of the reason I'm looking for a synth/keyboard is to practice ear training and to aid in transcribing

You can, with lots of tweaking, make it sound kinda piano-ish; but, since it's a monosynth, you can't play anything that was written for piano anyway. For ear training and transcribing, you'd be much better off with something polyphonic. The Phatties (and Moogs in general) are awesome for basses and leads (and weird sound effects), but not much else.

Still, you could use the Phatty as a MIDI controller for another synth, but it's a bit to expensive to be used just for that.
