Moog Taurus sounds from my bass...

I've been researching different bass synth pedals (EHX Bass Mono Synth, Boss SYB-5,
Digitech Dirty Robot are among the main ones) and I'm not sure if any of these will do what I'd like. I'm looking for something that will basically allow my bass guitar to produce a Moog Taurus type of sound. I don't need any fancy solo type sounds, just basic low-lying ground fog type sounds. Thanks in advance, any advice is greatly appreciated.

You picked a very good and bad time to ask that question because there are a lot of choices. The two you mentioned are excellent starting places if you want something easy and affordable because they offer preset popular tones.

If you want to be creative or want to join a community of people making sounds then the Source Audio C4 or Spectrum might be worth checking out. There are other choices out there [Red Witch, Keeley, Pigtronix, Subdecay...] if you are wanting to make your own tones or wanting to dig deeper from many manufacturers plus the combining of pedals like envelopes, filters, octavers, distortions, modulators and so forth.

Awesome! Thanks for this very valuable information!!

I'd like to jump on this thread of Bass Synth knowledge,

I'm looking to get some synth sounds out of my bass, ideally using plugins. I have guitar rig but there's only the harmonic synth in there and its not great for bass. Maybe I need to spend more time fiddling with it? Does anyone know of any nice plugins for bass synth or can share any guitar rig presets with me? Thanks.

What setting do you use?

I’ve watched several demo videos, and none get very Taurusy.

With the recent influx of synth pedals out there in the past two years or so (Bananana Matroshka, Future Impact, Enzo Meris, EHX Bass Mono Synth, SA C4, Boss SY-1, etc), I feel there’s one that’s gotta nail a Taurus for Police, Genesis and Rush songs (among others)

I have two pedals that are pretty effective at emulating the classic Moog Taurus "BOWWWWWWWWW" fat square wave with filter sweep tone*

- A Bananana Matryoshka -- which admittedly can be a bit finnicky about getting that sound perfectly dialed in because of the tiny (and interactive) knobs;
- An old Korg G5, which is uncanny in its ability to approximate/replicate Moog sounds.

*My benchmark for classic Taurus sounds has always been those three or four notes Alphonso Johnson stomps out towards the end of John McLaughlin's "Every Tear For Every Eye".

Looked that one up on YouTube. Wow. That’s awesome.

I'll hop on this thread with the Boss SY-1. This pedal I've found can cop the Rush Taurus pedals sounds from '77 to '81.

Cool. This is great info.

Does it do the Subdivisions synth tone as well?

Anyone with experience playing your bass through an actual synth? I'm thinking like a Novation Bass Station II.

Speaking generally, some keyboard synths do allow you to make use of the filter and other tone shaping circuits when using an external input like a guitar or bass. It's not the same as a "synth" sound, so to speak, since the source of the sound is your bass tone, not the oscillator in the actual synth. I don't know of any keyboard synths that allow you to trigger an oscillator from an audio signal like a guitar or bass, but my experience in this domain is admittedly limited. There may be some out there for all I know.

Thanks I keep toying with the idea of getting an actual synth bass keyboard just for grins.
