He is such a decent person! That makes the fact he is a phenomenal musician even better.
Couldn't agree more. I've had the opportunity to meet him a couple of times, and talk with him at a clinic, and he is indeed a superb human being, one of the best bass musicians on the planet, and a superb educator. Nice to hear someone of his caliber talk about the subject of supporting other musicians. The city I used to live in is notorious for this not happening. I always tried to make as many gigs of fellow players as I could, but there were only a very few other faces of fellow musicians in the crowd, and it was always the same people. It seemed there was a prevailing attitude of competition instead of cooperation and support there when it came to gigs, with very little actual love of music (at least insofar as coming out to listen) by the majority of the musicians around. I loved a lot of things about that city, but it has a weird and insular music scene.
He really is a great guy and musician. Have had the pleasure of seeing him several times in the Boston/Cambridge venues.
He was at the Regatta Bar in the Charles Hotel playing a gig with some local greats, George Garzone on sax and Bob Gullotti ( God rest his soul) on drums. Amazing show! We talked with John in the lobby after the show, he was just so personable. He said that he had driven out to the gig from NY with his wife and at the time, two young daughters. It was a pleasure to meet him and talk about music and family. He always has words of wisdom and encouragement.
