Good day. I just swaped out the stock pickups of my Lakland 55-14 for a Nordstrand nj5s and mm5.4. The preamp is stock. After a gig I realized I needed more zing for slapping. I maxed out the treble already and its still lacking. Can you guys recommend a preamp or mod to help give me more treble?

Odd! Those pups are definitely not dark sounding! The MM is in parallel?
Are you using the right pot value?

This and strings jump out at me. I can't imagine those pickups not outputting enough treble.

My apologies for not adding more info.

The pickups before were the stock ones, I had the low A string volume issue and decided to replace them with the Nordstrands stated in my original post. As for the strings, its currently strung with DR low riders .45-.130. I noticed a slight dip in treble when I went from the stock pickups to the nordstrands. Pickups are set at factory default height as prescribed by Lakland.

To add, my other bass is a Fender Marcus Miller 5 and I believe im attuned to its treble response. I do like how the Lakland sounds currently it sounds organic, growly and more pronounced hi mids, but it just lacks the "glass breaking" sound on the very top end when I pop a muted note on the D and G string.

I ran it through a GK 1001 RBII + 4x10 gk neo and some Laney amp and 4x10. All of which I still find lacking on popping the D and G string.

Preamp is stock Lakland so Pot values should be spec Lakland.

MM pickup is wired series/single coil/parallel.

Im considering trying on DR Hi Beams hoping Id get the sound I want.

I don't know what to say - the way you describe your setup and what you have done I would have thought there would be treble 'coming at you' from all angles. Perhaps it is the comparison with the Miller that is the issue. I recall trying a Fender Miller Jazz back in the spring and I thought it was incredibly bright (far to bright for me).

I also assume that the Lakland pre is matched to the stock pickups (in terms of impedance, resistance, frequency response, output levels etc) so it could be that your replacement pups simply don't play nicely with the stock Lakland pre. From what I have heard, Lakland customer support is second to none - why not give them a call...

Here is a sample of my 55-02 with the same pickups. The only difference is I had a Bart pre but everything is flat. Is this not bright?

Our basses sound exactly the same, love the growl and all. Treble response is identical too. I guess I just wanted to get the same sound as my miller 5 when popping muted notes on the D and G, specially triplets and such. I just find the miller easier to coax articulated muted triplets vs the Lakland at current state.

As mentioned, the Miller is a very bright sounding bass, hence why Im asking if I can get to that level of brightness with a preamp or string change.

Try stainless steel strings if you haven't already. Was the amp tweeter turned on? Maybe that's the reason.
