When I opened TalkBass this morning, I was immediately presented with this obviously double-bass-specific ad ...

As far as I know the first use of G.A.S. as "Gear Acquisition Syndrome" was in a Sports Illustrated article around 1972, specifically talking about outdoors gear, even more specifically fishing gear and accessories thereof including the associated apparel. Considerable space was devoted to discussion of how the different mail-order outfitters marketed their goods.

Believe it or not, Eddie Bauer, Abercrombie and Fitch, and LL Bean were major outfitters of fishing and outdoors goods in those days. Bean's still does a fair amount of that; I don't know if Bauer even still exists and Abercrombie and Fitch seems to be nothing but loud-stereo mall stores selling ugly clothing to teens and plastered with photos of semi-nude models who apparently sat on a corn cob and don't know what to do about it.
