(Edit: I know the premise is for well-known songs, so hopefully this list qualifies. I think they were all hits at one time, no deep cuts, and I think they'd be recognizable to the general audience. Or at least, you'd be like "oh yeah, I know that song" if you heard it.)

Dazz Band - Let it Whip (this one's a banger)
Diana Ross - I'm Comin' Out
Cheryl Lynn - Got To Be Real
Jamiroquai - Canned Heat (also made famous by Napoleon Dynamite)
Otis Redding - Sitting on the Dock of the Bay (one of the few where you can omit everything except bass and voice and it's still recognizable)

No, thank you. These threads always devolve into ‘favorites’ lists without any regard to the original premise. In the context of the general population knowing the songs that’s been listed so far, I’d say there’d very few. Sure, they might have heard some, but do they even know what a bass is, let alone being able to pick out what’s being played as a distinct part/hook? Someone mentioned Miles, Chambers, and “So What”; yeah, iconic…for us, but the average person doesn’t know it, and couldn’t care less. But they might know Seinfeld, however that’s getting pretty irrelevant now, and it’s not even a real bass.

Kind of, but a lot of modern music is similar in that way. "Our House" (in the middle of the street) also would fall under this category.
