Moving: which shipping method?

In a couple of weeks I'll be moving from Arizona to Ohio. I have about 12 basses and guitars that I need to move. I'll be hiring a moving company to move my household goods and driving one car and towing behind the other. I'm leaning towards putting my guitars in the towed car but it gets pretty hot in there. It's a black car with a black interior and gets upwards of 100 degrees inside when it sits in the sun. Is that too hot for the guitars? I'm more worried about damage from being knocked around if the shipping company moves them, especially the few not in hard cases. Which option do you think is better?

Take some with you, pack some yourself, hot or not, they'll be okay.
