I just wanted to make a thread to tell you guys about my experience with Mo Mina of Mo’s repair shop and Nordstrand Guitars. I hope it’s not too long.
I first encountered Mo when I got my first Nordy from a dishonest seller who didn’t tell me about a problem with the bass. Long story short Carey Nordstrand offered to fix the issue at a great price. Mo works on basses there and helped fix my bass and set it up.
After that experience I was sold on the whole Nordstrand team. I needed some work done on another bass of mine and immediately thought of Mo. I don’t remember which bass came first, my second Nordy (for a preamp swap), or my Clement fretless for a plane of the fingerboard and to have fret markers placed. Either way they both came out great and at a reasonable cost. Mind you that Mo’s shop is in CA and I live in CO; I ship my basses to him out there, that’s how good this cat is. I’ve also had him do some repairs to an older fretless fender and coat the board too. There are some good repair guys here in CO, but none are like Mo. I’d rather ship my bass to California and pay $50 each way to have things done right.
My 5th Mo project was a Fender Jaco fretless that I purchased here on TB. When I got this bass it had medium action, and could not be set up any lower without buzzing in the upper 3 frets and various other random spots on the board. I’ve owned two of these Jaco basses, and although you can often get a good sound out of it, but they simply don’t have the flattest boards from the factory. Needless to say I emailed Mo and said, hey Mo, I’ve got another for you. This time I don’t even ask for a quote, as I know Mo is going to give me a fair price (and I’m not some rich guy just saying that). I asked Mo to fix the dang fingerboard and go ahead a polyester coat it, for that real Jaco mwah.
This is how it turned out. This bass is set up with about 2/32 height off the board at the G string and 3/32 high on the E. The board looks amazing, like glass, and there is not a buzz to be found on this thing. I’ve never seen a Fender play this nice.
These shots are hard to get.
Look at the string height at the first fret; it looks like it’s lying on the board.
Long story short, if you need work done on your bass and the local techs are questionable, email Mo and get a quote. If you want a fretless that plays amazingly, definitely email Mo. Get your bass to play Mo-better, Mo-faster, and sound Mo-gooder.
