mp3 to sheet music software?

I remember my music teacher in HS talking about some software like this, he used it to help write arrangements for rock tunes w/ a string orchestra. I would ask him, but he is super busy I imagine as he has not responded yet. does anyone else know what the software is called?

Whatever it is I'm sure it's very very sketchy at doing this accurately. There's too much nuance to do it well let alone arrange it for anything. I have two friends with Music degrees making good money doing this professionally for www.musicnotes.com If they could be replaced by an app they certainly would have been by now.

I agree. There are some things that will take a SINGLE line and transcribe it in notation.... but like fisticuffs said, very sketchy at best.

Understand that all sound is one wave. So a mp3 of a symphony orchestra is one wave just like a solo guitar mp3 is one wave. A clarinet and a trumpet playing together make a different kind of wave, than either instrument playing alone, and we can hear the difference, but digitally, it is not quite as clear. Add to that nuances of rhytm and intonation and you have a very complex situation.

I understand that. I found a program that does it, but I didn't understand the format. It had a keyboard at the bottom of the screen and it had white marks that ran by you like a guitar hero song. no thanks.

I could have swore he said it was mp3. I'm starting to think it was MIDI. HS was ten years ago for me....a lot has happened.

MIDI is easy to turn into Notation. Most DAW's do this right out of the box. Taking single instruments to MIDI is also getting better and built into some DAW's but an MP3 of any song is probably gonna be awful.
