Double Bass Mr. Sims

Anybody else dig this Coltrane blues? I was messing around with it on piano, and decided to bring it in to the bandstand for my duo gig. Not a lot of pianists are aware of it. It's cool, a straight minor blues, but the head has a lot of Traneish benchmarks in it. Branford Marsalis covered it on one of his recordings; it was originally released on "John Coltrane Plays The Blues".

That record is one of my all-time favorites. The tune that gets me going is "Mr. Night." Dexter Gordon musta dug it, too, because he totally cops the "Mr. Night" groove as the introduction to "Moment's Notice" on Manhattan Symphonie.

Great record. Deep stuff. Thanks for the reminder, MJ.
