MTD 535 vs F-Bass BN5

Here is one of my favorite BN5 clips on youtube, showing how well it sits in a mix: Snarky Puppy plays live at Gezellig in 2008.

OT: I played a gig in Dallas with their guitarist earlier this year. Nice guy, good player. This clip is excellent.

Coincidentally, my MTD 535-24 and my BN-5 are both buckeye burl tops on ash. They are quite different tonally. The MTD has that characteristic treble snap, kind of naturally mid-scooped. Great for slapping. The F Bass is mellower and somewhat more versatile. It's got a warmer, fuller tone than the MTD. The F Bass came with volume/volume/tone controls, to which I am not used, so I took it down to Top Gear and had Dan Altilio convert it to volume/blend/tone. Now I just love it to death.

Think a neck through AC6 with frets and two magnetic pickups... more specifically, it is a fretted AC6 with two magnetic pickups (AC6s come standard with one), piezos, acoustic chambers, neck through, 28 frets, redwood top, ebony finger board, 4 cup holders and side air bags.

Congrats, I think this is really a nice deal you catched here!

At this time, I'm mainly playing neither my MTDs nor my Fbass but just my Fender Jazz Bass. That's why I should buy a Bravewood J style bass in early 2010.

Thanks. I bought the F Bass from a TBer in Israel. I prefer it tonally over the MTD, but they both are superb basses in every way. For the record, though, neither make it into my top three, which include a Sadowsky Modern 5-24, Lakland Joe Osborn 5, and Jerzy Drozd Obsession Excellency 5. The F Bass might be #4.

Wow! Smart buy. Not only is that bass quite a looker, but its uniqueness will help it hold its value over the years as well, or at least let it be sold more quickly than other BN5s that might be on the market, should you decide to sell it on.

When you get it, please post photos in Club Fbass. There is a great group of guys there that will share their BN5 experience with you and get you jump started on things like settings and string preferences, etc.

I have both an MTD 535 and a Fbass BN6. They're both THEEE ultimate basses. Super modern MTD and a Jazz bass on steriod. All I need for now and beyond. Here are some pics:

I've got to put MTD on my wish list I think. I've loved every one that I've heard.
