It's a phase problem between his VOCAL mic and whatever he uses for his bass.
But you should all notice that you can also have this "phase garbage" with a DI and a Mike on the the cab if you don't have the right tools
IE; delay/Phase shifters/HPF

That's my motto. Usually, not all the time, but usually when this type of thing happens from what I have seen is when bands try to bring the ""wall of sound into a small bar. Not all the time like I said, to avoid the potential posts to follow. Verus getting shifters, etc. Run 57's and take away some of the drum mics and strip down the set up, IF YOU CAN. Just run the DI, just run a couple drum mics versus micing every drum etc. maybe if you dont need them eliminate the subs etc. KISS, you will still sound good and most of the time I found get away with not having all these crazy phase issues. Phaze issue I have seen usually occur in small spaces like small stages or venues. Knock on wood, the only time I have dealth with this is when my idiot old singer INSISTED on bringing subs and micing every drum in a tiny bar that seated 75 people...I unplugged the subs, elinated some of the drum mics, unplugged my DI, unplugged the guitar cab mics..and it all went away and we were still WAY to loud for this bar without all the stuff.

As much as I like messing with PA and live sound stuff I enjoy playing music and sounding good more, I always say less is more unless your like some of the pro lovel audio engineers on this board that do this for a living and really know thier stuff.

a gate, or gate/compressor may be a worthwhile investment for the band. you can gate the vocal mikes, and the snare mic, and it will clean up the sound quite a bit.

How bout turning down on stage.........get rid of the mic and use a D.I. instead? A lot of bass players also play too loud on stage and they bump the lows too much. Mudd usually equals either distortion or lower frequencies overloading the mix.
