Multi effects pedals

I'm a big fan of the ME 50-B. I mainly use it for distortion on a few songs, a chorus on a couple and I keep a light compressor on all the time. It also has a pretty decent tuner built in. You can kick down the volume pedal while you tune so no one has to hear that.
The thing I like most about the unit is how clean it makes my set up. The fewer amount of patch cords you have in between effects the less that can go wrong when you play live. Also when something does go wrong there are less connections to trouble shoot.

Of course the flip side to that is if your multifx box fritzes out, you're left with no fx at all for the night. But if one single pedal or patch cord breaks at a gig, you can just remove it and still have the rest of your kit working.

This is true.

I could easily go without effects all night. I left my pedal board at home one night and my only concern was not having a tuner.:D
The way I have my rig wired, I can go direct to my amp in a matter of seconds.

A multi-effects unit will often be more trouble than it's worth. Try a few single effect pedals, buy the ones you like, and chain them together. That way, you're not paying for any sound that you dont need or want. Multi effects pedals seem to be the easy way out to most people, but more often than not, you end up with an encyclopedia of useless sounds, and you will sell the thing for half what you bought it for a month later on ebay. Sad story...I've been there

Hey I really, really tried. But just as your experience with multis , singles got too silly for me (example:three delay pedals so I can have three presets.) and I ended up selling a bunch of them for half of what I paid for them in TB. Sad story indeed. Multis have plenty of sounds, and they are only useless if I can't "see" them in a musical context.

Wow, i think im crosseyed now.

I think a yamaha magicstomp would suit you best. I don't know about down there in NZ but they're being sold ridiculously cheaply in the US at the moment and crop up on ebay for very little here in the UK too. The quality of the effects is superb and you can chain them in any order (more or less the only multi effect that does this besides mega expensive stuff). There are 3 versions, guitar, acoustic guitar and bass.

Wow, that thing looks WICKED. Plus, if I was an ebay customer, I could get one for 210 NZD including postage. Are there different models for bass and guitar?

E-bay is the go. Im in Australia and have to deal with the ridiculous over pricing they put on the products here. I have seen DOD 250s going for a few hundred dollars here... In the US they are like $40!!! I never have and never will buy an effect locally. I just use the shops as a test center. Find what I want and jump on the net to buy it. It sucks cos all the money is going overseas feeding another economy, but there is no way id pay the local prices :bawl:
I did a quick tally and my effects rig has an aussie retail value of about $2500. In reality I would be pushing it to have spent $700 - $800 aud.

This post isn't directly related to the original thread, but I thought it looked like a good opportunity to have a rant!! :D

There's only 1 "best" multi. Save your money for a TC Electronic G-System. They can be had for $1100 (maybe a hair less) or so, in excellent to pristine used shape. Everything else is a pretender.

But, there's no OD/Distortion/Fuzz on the G-System. If you want any of these, you need to add them separately.

Still, the only way I'd ever consider going multi.

I have a Zoom, but seldom use it. In my opinion you'd be better off buying just the effects you want and avoid the multi effects
A Zoom hardly represents the power of a decent multi FX unit. Sure, you can get better sounds with single effects, but with almost as good of a tone (after tweaking) and many convienances not found with single effects, I prefer using multi units. It also costs less in the long run. The only thing is, you have to get a GOOD multi unit to have a good sound. Anyway, do a search on the subject for more info.

So it's not really the "best" because it doesn't do drives. And since you don't have extensive experience with one then you really can't say it's the "best".
