Multi-instrument stands

I am looking for a multi stand as well.

I am not a fan of the Warwick-style multi stand. They work as advertised, but IMO, they are better for guitar. Guitars in the stand sit at an angle. For a guitar, this is a non-issue, but basses have longer necks. With a bass, you have to pull the stand out from the wall quite a bit, so the stand takes more floor space than is really necessary.

One of my road warrior friends has a road case stand. It holds the guitars in place almost vertically and uses a strap (it either snaps or velcros) to make sure the guitar doesn't fall out. I like this stand better, but they are fairly expensive for a guitar stand. I think the guitar-case style stands hold the guitars in place similarly, but they all seem to be either flimsy or very expensive.

Hello TalkBass!

This might not be the best sub-forum for this thread, but none of the others quite seemed right either. At least it involves holding basses... anyway, mods, feel free to move the thread if appropriate.

I'm in the market for a stand to hold several basses and guitars. I'm looking at the type of stand where the instruments all lean on their side in a row. Like these models (but not necessarily these in particular):
My question for you is, can you recommend a specific model? I'm not necessarily looking at the three above, I just wanted to show pictures of a couple of different styles so that we're on the same page.

The stand will be used exclusively at home, no touring or even gigging, so durability is not super high on the priority list. Being used in the home, it would be nice if it looks a little better than the Rockstand model above, but it doesn't necessarily have to.

I know that most of these only go up to a 7 guitar capacity, but it will be holding some combination of the following 8 instruments:
  • 4 electric basses
  • 3 acoustic guitars
  • 1 electric guitar
It doesn't necessarily have to hold all of them, but as many as possible would be nice.

The final bit of criteria is the price. While I'd love one of those temperature and humidity controlled guitarmoire (spelling?) things, I'm not currently able to drop a couple of thousand on this. The cheaper the better. I'd like to stay under $150, but I'd go up to about $200 for a standout product.

What can you show me, TalkBass?

To my way of looking at it. The one from Guitar Fetish is the best. Each guitar gets a slot the bottom of the body can sit in, and keeps it separate from the other instruments, while being cradled in a soft fake fur to protect the finish. What's not to like?

What would be really cool is if it could house a pedal board on the way to the gig.

Invalid Link Removed is what you want.

Here is a photo of the 3 instrument stand I have.

I also have one of those "briefcase style" cases (for 3 instruments) made by Rickenbacker for their 75th Anniversary, in 2006.

I would recommend the Quiklok 7-slot guitar stand. It's what I use and I have the exact same situation as you with 4 basses, 3 acoustics, and 1 electric. It's really important with a multi-slot guitar stand like this that the spaces are wide enough to fit an acoustic guitar in there among the electrics, the Quiklok has ample space.

Here's a link.

Another thing I like about mine/these stands is that there is bottom support for each instrument, individually, as opposed to the stands that just have a foam covered bar across the bottom; the Quik-Lok will help prevent the bodies from, potentially banging into one another while removing or putting an instrument back on the stand. And, both the bottom and top supports are nice and grippy, preventing the instruments from sliding around.

Here is straight on photo of my Quik-Lok stand.

Avoid anything from Hercules.
I have owned a couple of triple instrument stands from this maker that were gifted to me.
I'm glad I didn't buy them cause they suck. They simply fall apart as they are used.
It's almost as if these units were built to be quickly obsolete.
Total crap.

I've had my Hercules triple stand now since 2003 with zero problems. Either their QC has gone to pot, or you must be horribly abusing yours. Mine is built plenty stout.

I have used versions of multi-stands similar to the Rock stand. The problem is that the foam on the bottom wears through rather quickly and you end up putting your basses on a metal corner underneath the padding.

The briefcase style I've not used due to cost/stage space/extra crap to carry.

I've used several versions of Hercules stands, including the 2 and 3 instrument holder versions, and I still own several of the singles. They get thrown around with all my other stuff with no bags, cases or special treatment and I have never had a single issue with any of them.

These days, I'm using 2 of these amp hangers: Clip-On Guitar Hanger for Suitcase Handle -. I have a rig that is portable yet still beefy enough to support it, so it's super compact and easy.

I really like the looks of this. The only question I have is how well it does with nitro finishes. Do either of you have any old nitro finished guitars that you keep on this thing?

Nope, I don't have any nitro finished guitars. But all you have to do is what everybody does in these situations: just take a cotton towel or two, cut it up, and tape it over the contact points of the stand. Like so.

I don't keep my instruments on any stand long term so I can't answer your question other than to say I do have two acoustic guitars with nitro finishes that spend time, occasionally, on the stand with no negative results.

The Quik-Lok stands are cool looking for sure, however, there main quality is sure footed stability, along with foldability when traveling and they are lightweight but very sturdy.

I should add that these Quiklok stands we are talking about do not have foam contacts, they are just rubber contacts, don't know if that makes them safe for nitro or not.

For most gigs, I bring 2 basses and a Martin 12 string acoustic guitar. I have a Warwick 3 guitar stand that does the job pretty well. Recently, I have been considering the folding briefcase style. My guitar player has one and loves it.

 Thread starter needs space for more than three instruments ( 4 EBG, 3 acoustic guitars, 1 electric guitar) – said it's for home use only, you must've missed all that when you read the OP: "The stand will be used exclusively at home, no touring or even gigging"

IF you've got a dedicated wall space where the rack is always going to sit, then DIY some wall hangerage:

Not mine, for illustrative purposes only.

If you've no wall space left either, use the ceiling: Check out Brad Paisley's Telecaster Chandelier (plus a bunch of other storage rack solutions):

LOADS of solutions out there... Guitar hangers meant for the closet but hung from a cheapo rack shelf:

I have a generic version of that, works very well. The only caveat - you do have to be a little careful to keep them reasonably balanced or they can get tippy (that does have wider legs than mine, as well, so less susceptible).

IME, Three legs is tippy no matter how long the legs. DNA makes 5-leg stands, but only in singles or triples:

Digging your Traynor cabs and that Black Beauty Ric, I've never seen a Black 4005 before and with the creme binding... drool
Love 4005s, tis my favourite Ric, if I ever get a Ric it'll be a 4005.
Oh, and great stands, too, JS... yeah 'cause this thread's about stands (gotta keep it on topic).

Thanks, FF. :)

In well over a decade of searching I have only seen one other 4005WB in Jetglo, it was with a Japanese collector, so yeah this is extremely rare. I no longer own it (after 38 years), it is with another TB member who I sold it to in late Summer 2011. If fact, of everything you see in that photo the only things I still have are the Rickenbacker briefcase stand and the Amp rack as you see it minus the Walter Woods amp. I have been paring things down now (but I still have too much gear :smug:) for a while. I did have more instruments at the time of making that photograph but I just showed some essentials.
