Multi scale recommendations

My son just graduated from high school and is going to Delta State University. They have a program he is going to called the DMI or Delta Music Institute. He is going for a sound engineering degree. The short end is he wants a 5 string multi-scale and we told him we need to keep it around $1100. We have looked at the Ibanez offerings and I have seen a couple of reviews of the SRMS series and they weren't glowing. The EHB seemed to get the better nod. Just looking for other offerings around that price range and any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Of course, he wants a Dingwall, but that is a little too pricey. Thanks

There's a whole long EHB thread here. Ask there and the many members with EHBs will be able to provide answers.
Member @Aidil has had SRMS and maybe EHB IIRC.

Congrats to your lad and best of success with the DMI course and career.
Not wanting to sound like a nanny, but tell him to get some quality custom fitted musician type earplugs, especially for live work. He will thank us later. These are the ones I use, but there are other brands too.

If he wants a Dingwall, everything else will be second choice and a compromise. Does he have the chance and time to save some money? Or is there another relative who might be willing and able to contribute or who might lend him the missing bucks?

The EHBs are excellent. I owned the EHB1005MS and the B string is one of the best I’ve had. String changes were very quick as well.
The only con to it is the pickups and the on-board preamp. It was lackluster.

Have you looked into the new multiscale BTB basses from Ibanez? They’re a bit more expensive than $1100 but are trying to go after Dingwall and the Spector NS Dimension.

Additionally, the ESP LTD B-1000 series multiscales are also excellent.
