Muscian's Friend? Really??

Under no circumstances do I doubt your thorough research- it is something I will keep in mind for further purchases and after you mentioned, have noticed a great deal of similarity between inventory/price between AMS and ZZsounds.

Was trying to find differences in policies or whatever, the only thing I can find is that American Musical has an extended 12 month warranty for free on some items and zzounds doesn't mention that.

Have never needed the extended warranty- save for some Berhringer powered speakers that both died outside of even that extra 12 months- but with less than 50 hours of actual use on either speaker. and honestly, this was 2004-2005 so do not recall if the 12 month was in effect back then. (Lesson learned, again and again- you get what you pay for)
However, the AMS 12 mos warranty does play into buying decisions somewhat.

It's great that you haven't had any issues but that doesn't discredit anybody else's experiences. Let's say a car company sold 1,000,000 of a certain type of car and the motor wound up having an 80% failure rate. This means that despite the car being a terrible piece of garbage, there are 200,000 people out there that can honestly say they never had theirs break.
Agreed. The store sending out a used piece of equipment was a horrible and stupid mistake. Someone's head should have rolled about that. But Guitar Center employs minimum wage staff who aren't trained and really aren't invested in the company personally. So there is always a good amount of shoddy customer sales and support. I have to agree with that 100%.

Who do you think you're referring to? Big talk from someone I never met and easy to have big opinions behind a computer. You don't know me. I treat everyone fair.

Not big talk, talk from past experience. I've run into you before when I had something bad to say about GC, so it is from experience. You posted something snippy to an opinion I had about GC's customer service.
Once again, good for you :-)

Congratulations. You just made my ignore list. Have a great day. I suggest you likewise block me to avoid any further discussion.

Yup. Vulture Capitalism at its best.
Please. Companies went to BAIN. Guitar Center would have been gone a long time ago if not for them. The largest problem GC has is what all large brick and mortar businesses have, high costs and high taxes. In the last few years, GC has been very fair to me when I walked in with trades. Better than they were decades ago. Prices were good also. If I'm ordering online though, I prefer Sweetwater. They go the extra mile.

So last week I ordered a new Markbass Little Mark 250 Blackline amp head through Musician's "Friend." I was really looking forward to the amp head and even dusted off a place for it (I never dust). Today, I get a plain, brown cardboard box from Guitar Center (#217, Dublin California). "What's this?" I say, as I had not ordered anything from Guitar Center (#217, Dublin California).

I opened the box to find a clearly used, unboxed, dinged up, Markbass Little Mark 250 Blackline amp head. No paperwork. No invoice. Nothing but bubblewrap and a 'scratch and dent' Markbass head covered in fingerprints from Guitar Center ......#217...... Dublin, California.

I called Musicians "Friend" and was told that they partner with Guitar Center and that there have been issues with Guitar Center sending floor demos and used items out as new. Wow. I get that I'm not Phil Lesh or Marcus Miller; that I'm just one of the 'unwashed masses' but seriously Musicians "Friend" and Guitar Center (#217, Dublin California) this ain't right.

So instead of irritating the wife with mediocre bass playing at full volume through my new Markbass amp head, I am wrapping this paperweight back up in its bubble wrap, putting it back in its brown cardboard box and sending it on its way.

Musicians "Friend" ain't getting any more coin from this guy. I'll stick with Sweetwater, where I have had really good products and service.

Seriously, I get that a lot of musicians like their guitars and basses to have the relic treatment, but I don't expect a brand new piece of electronic equipment to be relic'd as well. The yellow font on Markbass is bad enough...

I had a very similar experience recently with Guitar Center. I bought some Adam Audio monitors from them, choosing GC over Sweetwater (my go to online retailer) only because my wife had a discount with GC. They sent me (and it took them a while, but I wasn’t expecting otherwise, in the midst of a pandemic) an obvious floor demo and one had a dent in the ribbon tweeter, so I returned them the same day. While this happened, Adam announced a new model (with the cone size I originally wanted) and I immediately preordered it from Sweetwater without even giving a thought to sticking with GC, in spite of the 5 percent discount. Needless to say, everything went very smoothly with Sweetwater.

Sounds to me like you've got it all figured out.

Just to show the difference in customer service. I ordered a speakon cable from Sweetwater and they shipped it USPS. After a few days tracking on the order was still showing it not received by USPS. Called Sweetwater and they shipped me an another one via FedEx which I received fairly quickly. About a week later the USPS one arrived. I called Sweetwater to get an authorization to send it back. They told me keep it as a gift an apologized for the delay.

Well, my issue with musician's friend is that my amp was supposed to be here on Monday. Ups sent me an email saying they can't make the scheduled delivery time. Tracking says they're still waiting for the item. Musician's friend's tracking says they're waiting on UPS. I chatted with them this morning, and support says that my amp "shipped" on Monday. And, that they're waiting for UPS to pick it up. So...what that means is that they never shipped it. They just marked the order shipped on Thursday, sent me tracking info on it, and never even packaged the amp, and still haven't.

See, I was really thinking that they might have dropped it or something, and were looking for a replacement. She said no, its just sitting in the warehouse for no apparent reason whatsoever, with no rhyme or reason why I haven't been playing it for the last 3 days. $1600 too. It's not like it was a 200 buck deal. I want my amp.
Okay, I finally got the real low down. After talking to two customer service reps, the third one finally gave the real scoop. So, it seems that because of the "protests" going on in the city, UPS was unable to pick up my order (or any order I guess) from the rialto warehouse...for an entire week. So, after some good frustration, I just got the info that my amp has finally reached a UPS truck and is in transit. It'll be here on wednesday...from Oregon. Crazy man

I didn’t have any problems with MusiciansFriend, nor GuitarCenter, online prior to the virus quarantine. I imagine they are having problems getting gear since then. I have run into the same kind of bait and switch at other retailers since this started. Some small independent stores are just saying they are ‘out of stock‘. I’ve also had a “boutique” amp on order from a well known maker for 6 months. It is ready now, but can’t be shipped because of rioters, protesters and curfews. I’m sure there are a lot of factors causing these problems, aside from bankruptcies.

MF was a revelation after dealing with the local music store that jacked up prices and only had limited inventory. living 120 miles from the nearest metro area I didn't know what I didn't know. I would never downplay any other's bad experience, but I've had good experiences with MF. Granted I don't spend nearly as much as some folks, but it seems as if some are rooting for MF to fail. I wish them all the luck and hope they can return to profitability and good service, for my sake! That said, Sweetwater has been excellent, it's just nice to have choices & competition.

Thank you all for your input. I mean that. It's really informative for me to hear so many different takes on the situation. And for those of you awaiting your orders, I hope you get your stuff and it's exactly what you expect!:)

As for me, I just dropped some coin on the Genzler Magellan 350 that is available in the TalkBass store. I was in the market for a 300-500 watt, Class D amp (which set this whole course of events into motion originally) and the Genzler looks like it may fit my needs perfectly.

When I ordered it, it seemed a little heavy at 60 thousand pounds. Then my wife gave me my glasses and I noticed that was only 6 pounds (with a lot of zeros after...). That's much better for me as I live in an old house and I don't think my sub-flooring is up to that much weight. :roflmao:
