Here's how many songs I recognize from these lists (I'm 29, turning 30 very soon):


1967 (posted earlier): 10
1977: 7
1987: 14
1997: 12 (Last year in high school + military)
2007: 2 only.


On that last 2007 list, by looking at the artist list I think you find mostly modern r'n'b, hip-hop, rap and other similar music I'm not at all interested in, hence the few songs I recognized. I did recognize a few more artists though.. I guess I would recognize more if I would listen to these songs, but that goes more or less for all lists I suppose.

It's sad to see how the music on these billboard lists have been more and more focused to a few genres only...

I'm a youngin' and I hate most classic rock. But I can point you to modern bands that are just as creative, and much better produced thanks to today's technology. I always found the kids who listened to nothing but classic rock were very close minded and really hadn't heard much of what today had to offer.

Threads like this never end well... I'm getting close to my boiling point already .

Haha, yeah, on the basis of their name, they get lumped in with all the pop screamo bands. That'll teach 'em to have a trendy name a decade before the trend which their name follows caught on!

The purpose of commercial radio is not music. The purpose of commercial radio is to sell you things period. It's been a long old time since commercial radio was populated by folks that cared about music.

Check out http://www.littlestevensundergroundgarage.com/ for something like what radio could be. It might not necessarily be to your taste but it is about someone who is knowledgeable about music putting out what he likes. Invalid Link Removed a local a local cat that does the same. On WNKU on Saturdays, here, Little Steven comes on at 2:00PM followed by American Routes and finally Mr. Rhythm Man ends up at 9:00PM. If I am free to listen to the radio, that's where my ears are.

We also have a community station called Invalid Link Removed that has who knows what on it all of the time. Gotta give props to WAIF programmers for supporting local music big time. When I've brought them stuff that'll be good radio that's related to a show I was producing they've put it on.

I do wish that the FCC would tighten back up on the number of stations that any company is allowed to have as well as the rules that say that stations have to serve thier community in exchange for the use of our airwaves. That way we might have more of the above types of programming.

My cheap arse doesn't buy a lot of music, but most of the CD's that I have bought in recent years has been from local artists or from smaller indies that I have actually seen or worked with live.

So yeah, turn off that nasty mega-corporate stuff.

I'm actually holding out hope for a music revolution to come soon. As bands gain more access to the internet and people learn where to go find these bands, I'm hoping it'll allow bands more creative freedom and the chance to make a little money without involving the MBAs at the record companies and radio stations.

I think a lot of people are starting to get a little tired of the cookie-cutter stuff being churned out and the idiots being thrown out there to perform it. I know the really young kids, 8-15 or so eat that cookie-cutter Disney crap up, but they just really don't know any better yet and kids tend to just take whatever is thrown at them and assume its the "in thing". Hopefully with experience they will game some "musical taste".

well, start it yourself. go see local bands and BUY THEIR MERCH. support college and cool internet radio. heck, give the busker on the street a dollar and an audience.

the kid has an opinion, and he knows what he likes. he went out on i-tunes, on his own, and found Accept, UFO, Old Scorpions, Original lineup Rainbow etc. Brought a tear to my eye. His buddies are the same way. Don't dismiss these opions due to age. The age group you're referring to grew up on Britany, N'Sync, and friggin' rap music. Of course they don't know what's good. Metal, to them, means loud & fast w/screamo vocals. That's not metal, that's garbage. Metal can be heavy and still have melody, catchy rhythms, and hooks. Lyrics that tell a story, instead of bllllaaaaaaarrrrggggh !

Rock music is in a big decline right now. Not just on the charts, or on the MTVs or on the radio- live venues are closing. Fifteen years ago in town- in the "college" area, there were a PLETHORA of bars with bands. Out of the "bigger" places that had bands play- exactly one is left- and that place has had a "pay to play" concept going on for 10 years. There's still a few places that do the indie rock thing- but there's a lot fewer and they're more spread out.

The live music scene is crap. Local bands don't have the draw they used to. Maybe that's just the way I see it- but I hear similar comments from people all over.

My theory is around 1997 Clear Channel consolidated their monopoly on the music scene. From that point on a "rock" band was something that sounded like Creed or Nickelback. If I grew up thinking Creed or Nickelback was "rock," I would want nothing to do with it, and I sure as anything wouldn't go out looking for more.

While I don't doubt there's some irony in that- what I do know is I've seen loads of "classic rock" shirts on kids and not a lot of current rock shirts on kids. When Junior wanted to start learning to play guitar, the two he wanted to learn were "Crazy Train" and "Stairway."

Uhhh, I think it's mostly because a lot of the great bands out there today can't really afford the marketing thanks to Clear Channel and the "bands" they promote. The good music today just isn't marketable. I have to go through great lengths to find tshirts of bands I like, even importing them from Europe for close to $50 a shirt.

You can't really judge today's music trends from fashion anyway. Someone who likes indie music is a lot more likely to wear a no brand sweater or something like that...

good point, for the most part, only people into classic radio rock, pop-country, metal, and radio-pop wear band shirts. It has nothing to do with which bands are considered "cool" other than it's just not "cool" to wear band tees.

+1 when I was 12 I started getting into good music and so what i wear band shirts, maybe its because I'm a fan???? I have looked into every band I have a shirt of because i only wear band shirts of my favorite bands. me and my friends JUST talked about music all the time and laughed at all the emo kids with FOB shirts.

Sorry but as much as I respect some rap (the underground) I still have to say even that isn't music to me, its more poetry with a beat. Way to repetative to have any real musical aspect to it IMO
