Double Bass Musical Quotes in Jazz

No gig is complete without a Wizard of Oz quote. Am i the only one that plays with folks who do this? I swear i have heard quotes of Wizard of Oz from multiple players in my area.

But yes i love quoting. There was a guitar player here who used to quote the Simpsons theme all the time, hah.

When I played (guitar) in a big band a very long time ago the leader once mentioned to everyone that he used to play with a trombonist who started every solo by quoting "English Country Garden".
For some reason phrases of that tune became a common quote in the band thereafter.

Now from time to time I hear a musical quote that really makes me tick.

As an example is the ending of a phrase by Mozart:

Does anyone else here love to quote musical tidbits?

I have never been one to do this myself, but I have worked with players who did. Some of them came up with pretty cool quotes.

I have also worked with players who did it rather poorly. There was a trumpet player who frequently tried to quote the opening lick to Cream's Sunshine of Your Love. I thought it came across as crude, tiresome, and totally out of place.

Clapton quotes Blue Moon in the guitar solo.

I insert quotes into walking-bass lines - "broken-feel" playing. I'll quote - steal - from anyone, from Couperin to Scriabin, but right now la coqueluche is 'ol Maurice; he's like the older French brother I never had. Or something. In this, of course, it's vitally important to read treble clef.
