If you are still learning and not very skilled yet, I'd recommend U2. Adam Clayton is a master at the simple but perfect groove. If you can play like him, everything else will fall into place. Other essential players in the rock canon, IMHO, include Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello & the Attractions), Paul McCartney, and Mike Mills (REM).

I add John Entwistle (the who) for melodic fills. You don't have to play his licks exactly, he just had a very special way of using the neck.
