Musician earplugs

Until now, we´ve used In Ear Monitoring in our Band and it was really fine and comfortable. We all were very satisfied with it. We used Sennheiser EW300 IEM and the UE5pro Earphones.

Now the German Goverment sold the UHF Frequencies from 790 -865Mhz where these Systems work, to the Internet Providers. So they can offer Broadband Internet to the Countryside Areas.

Cool for the People living there, but sad and poor for Thousands of Musicians using UHF Wireless Systems. For Guitar and Bass there are some digital Systems on the Market like Line 6 Relay G30/50/90 or the Stageclixx and there will be other Systems like this.

But a few Years ago we´ve spent lots of Money for our In Ear Systems. This will be all gone, because from 2015 (latest possible Point) you can´t use the Systems, because you´ll get disturbed Signals. So they are electronic Garbage at least.

Theatres, Musicals and fixed Installation who work in a professional Way will get Money from the Goverment to minimize their Loss, but Musicians in Bands who do Music for Fun will get nothing.

So we sold our In Ear Systems right now and we also minimized our Loss in our Way. We´ve bought a liittle PA for the Rehearsals and little Gigs.
As Ear Plugs I´m using the Etymotic ER-20 right now and they are okay for me, but I´m thinking about to get me some Custom made Earplugs, because nothing is comperable to that.

We will see what the Future brings. Maybe...no, I´m sure there will be also digital Sytems for In Ear Monitoring and then we go back to In Ear....Maybe.

I have a set of custom plugs which I use sometimes, but one problem I have with them is that although I can hear with them really well most of the time, when I sing my voice in my head drowns out everything else around me, even with the lowest dB cut inserts.

i like these:

i always use the stronger filter. i used to have a similar pair made by Hearos that was essentially the same deal.

foam plugs are a pain to use and screw with the sound an awful lot. this style is much better, and not terribly expensive- i've been using that type for about 10 years, no issues.

the even higher-end ones are great, but i think most pros will be completely satisfied with this type.

and to those not using ear plugs- please, spend the $20 on earplugs. or the $2 on a pack of foam ones at least...

i had i hearing test about a month ago found out i have some hearing loss in the upper register...Whew thank god not the lower.I need to get a set ...I stand next to our drummer to his left. His snare kills my ear every night. It so annoying he uses plugs then beats the crap out of his snare hurting our ears.

Surefire got it going on with thier 2 models of earplugs. and cheap too.I use mine at the range every week.

Honestly, I have never found them to be enough for me. I can get away with them if I am just firing pistol, outdoors. If I am near any sort of reflective surface, indoors, or firing my 3Gun AR, I have to slip muffs over top. I know a guy, who works on a shop floor, who gets me industrial foam plugs. Those are some serious plugs - supposedly 33 dB.

For music, though, the Surefires are less muffled. I use them when playing drums. They provide just enough reduction, with a better freq. curve. I carry them while on-duty, also.

That's not good. In the UK, the Government just paid decent compensation to those who had licenses. So anyone who had been paying the license - theatre, TV, Music - anyone really, got the compensation and the people who avoided the license ended up with kit that now gets interfered with by 4G phones. That said, I actually kept a couple of systems on the license free channels = ch70, and it still comes in handy.

Yeah i have those, Hearos HI fi or something like that.

Any comments on these babies?

I wear mine on stage regularly. Once on a "quieter" gig I wore just one, for the side of my head near the drums. At the end of the night I took the other one out and WOW there's a significant difference in what each ear could hear. That's was my one lesson in "just wear both plugs all the time!"

To those who have customs - yes I am sure they are better. But as other have said, better something than nothing.

I am using Invalid Link Removed . These Eargasms take things further than earmuffs or foam protection. Instead of acting as a mechanical mechanism to completely block off all sound, the noise is filtered so that “good” sound can still go through. For musicians, this can make the difference between a good performance and a below-par one since your craft undoubtedly depends on your interaction with the sounds you produce and those of others, like your fellow band members. And also it has Volume Adjustment function .

I've got some Hearos... and I still find they just muffle the sound. Dunno whether it's a fit thing or what.
I'm lucky! Been playing bass in bands for 40yrs and hearing test revealed a li'l lots in the upper registers...tis all. Lucky! !!!!
Dunno whether to go and spend lots on custom fitted ones or. ...?????
I think I've got wide ear canals... so I struggle to get a decent seal with any over the counter deal. But when I jam the Hearos in. ...it's muffle time. If they ain't jammed in. ...ain't much seal/reduction.
Thoughts. ....?

Visit an audiologist - one recommended by ANY custom IEM vendor - and get a second opinion.. Might cost you a few $$, but at least you'd know.
I can't use universals.. so customs is the only way. I detest going back to wedges for any gig...

I had a disappointing experience with some custom earplugs (bad sound quality and poor protection). Maybe I should have tried a different audiologist....

I now use Invalid Link Removed for high-volume gigs, I actually like these a lot better than the customs.
