Musicians friend stupid deal of day: Fender American Vintage '64 Jazz Bass Black Rosewood

In 1970, $200 was a noticeable amount of money. I was able to pay my rent, and have $$'s left over for other things. ...and I still had my '63 Jazz, which (fortunately) I haven't sold yet, but... who knows! This is tempting.

Ya, that's what I said, Squire...

... the regular price is over $2000?.... no wonder the deal looks so bad to me even though it's $900 off......

What's a "round-laminate rosewood fingerboard" that is in the description?

If that is what I think it is, $1200 is overpriced.

Then there is this: "Fender flash coat lacquer body and neck finish"... meaning it is nowhere near a true vintage re-issue bass. That very likely means a final, thinly applied clear lacquer over a modern, less costly finish.

I would rather have a minty EBMM bass that will go for less than that. Too much short cuts, as it seems, in that Fender product. It's on sale because they have stock on hand that's not moving at the projected rate.

I am going to go ahead and coin a new term, "Squazi." It is pronounced, squat z. Definition: a person or persons who feel compelled to continually correct others on their spelling of Squire as it relates to Fender's entry level instrument offerings. As in, help me, the Squazi are after me because I accidentally on purpose misspelled their sacred Squire name.

A round laminate fingerboard is a mid-60s Fender spec. They used flat-bottomed boards earlier - the radius was only on the top of the rosewood. Later, they switched to a radiused maple neck with a curved piece of rosewood for the board (not flat on the bottom). This is a vintage-accurate spec.

Flash coat lacquer has minimal if any sealant underneath. This is about as close as you get to an original finish MINUS the Fullerplast underneath. It's thin, light nitro. Not vintage accurate except to the basses that mistakenly were sold without the hard undercoating that was used from the early days.

These are NOT cheap basses. IME they are on par with the Custom Shop stuff from five years ago.
