Musicman Stingray?

im planning to get a new bass.. and i never owned a stingray. but i played em and really like em.. i cant really afford a 1st hand stingray so im buying / planning to buy one from america or something.. my price range is around 850 ( ill pay for shipping )and it has to be shipped to malaysia.. ive checked ebay but seams none of them ship oversees.. and i kinda trust this place more to get a decent bass.. which stingray should i get? there are afew types right? i think i play an ernie ball one.. i want a very versatile sound. i would really like a rosewood neck on the stingray.. if any of you are selling or there is a sale going on plz tell me thx tb

There's the Sterling by MusicMan Ray34. I've heard good things about them. They're quite a bit cheaper, though I don't know what the avaiability and pricing is like in your area.

+1 An SBMM Ray 34 would be an excellent choice. The versatility of a Ray comes from hand placement and effective use of the onboard EQ.

I would definitely check out Sterling Ball by Music Man basses if you have them locally. It'll be hard to get an EBMM Stingray to your door for $850, even used.

I dont know if the Stingray is as "versatile" as you'd like, I've always found them to have a very distinct tonal range. Also, would be very difficult to get a used (real) Musicman Stingray for $850, even heavily used. I usually see them going for over $1000 USD.

I disagree that Stingrays aren't versatile. The 3 band EQ allows you to do plenty.

i found the sterling more versatile. the electronics are similar to those in the stingray 5 string. can alter that tonal range a bit to get a little more p like.

I LOVE Stingrays. But if I wanted a truly versatile bass, I'd look elsewhere. Preferably with two pickups and an active eq. Maybe an HH Stingray. Stingrays will fit any style. But, IMHO, they really aren't that versatile with the single H.

And that's exactly why I just got a G&L 2KT. Two pups.....will travel.

I was just about to chime in! Just sold my Ray and keeping the G&L L-2500. I used to love the SR necks, but I find the G&L fits right in the pocket of my thumb/index finger. Not too thick, not too thin. Tone monster.

I was just about to chime in! Just sold my Ray and keeping the G&L L-2500. I used to love the SR necks, but I find the G&L fits right in the pocket of my thumb/index finger. Not too thick, not too thin. Tone monster.

But I am still getting a new Sting Ray Mound. I am hooked on that clickity tone. Best of both worlds..so to speak.

Try searching eBay for new ray34's. There's a few American companies that ship them internationally for decent prices. Sure it's not a 'real' stingray, but they're pretty close and good value for money.

I completely agree with Ed. I don't understand how someone can say these basses aren't versatile.

It's not that they're not versatile, it's just that no matter how you EQ or pluck a StingRay it's always going to sound like a StingRay. You're not going to sound like a Fender P or a Warwick Thumb no matter how hard you try.

That said, I love my StingRay and use it for all sorts of genres and gigs
