ive got a decent amount of money saved up and im looking for a new bass (and a decent combo). i loved the cut-through ability and tone cliff burton got in the ride the lightning and kill em all albums but theres no way i can afford a ric on my budget. i saw Link Removed local guys a couple times and loved the tone and how the bassist cut through (and his skills ). i cant afford a stingray or a sterling and saw this.

are these things decent for the money?
in the mix, are they as capable as a stingray?
can you guys tell if that one is an active model?

i'd like an all black body with a maple board but since their discontinued, i cant be picky..

SUBs are great basses. The pretty much sound like Stingrays. Get one!

I could be wrong (it's happened once) . . but I do believe
the electronics are the same but 2-band (if active) and the
only difference is finish/fret work . . . cosmetic . . .

Boondog, the electronics are generally the same, but the SUB Sterling does not have the 3 way switch. It's not a big deal, I love my SUB Sterling. It sounds great and the finish is not bad. For the money you can't find a better American made bass.

I had a 5-string active SUB and it was a great instrument. It is gone only because (once again) I discovered I'm not a 5-string player. The finish on the body is somewhat abrasive (but durable) and the bass was heavy but the fretwork was immaculate and and it sounded great. I can't speak for the passive models.

I may have inadvertently implied that fretwork was inferior
but that's not what I meant. EB did not use any filler on the
Subs so there may some visible cavities under the frets
along the fret board. By cutting some minor corners I guess
they were able to reduce material costs, production cycle
times and make the Sub less expensive - still kicks but like
it's more expensive siblings tho . . .

like the guys said, the SUB line of EBMM's generally has the same electronics as the non-SUB line of MMs and the cost savings to you is attributed to the finish and other cosmetic things

Yeah, I have the SUB sterling. Great bass for the money. It's the bass I pick up and play most often nowadays.

I love SUBs. I've tried them in a few shops and they felt great and sounded great as well. They're pretty high up on my GAS list, even though I have a regular SR.

The pickguards on all SUB models should be interchangeable with the exception of the SUB 5.

I believe all Sterling SUBs had an active 3EQ preamp. The SR SUBs came with the option of either a passive treble and bass cut or active 2EQ. I think it's the same for the SUB 5s too.

That SUB looks exactly like my SUB, which is passive. I don't think they made an active sub with just the 2-band EQ. Also, I don't see a battery cover on the back (again, don't know if the active SUBs had those, the way the SR does)

I still have my SUB, but I also have a StingRay. While I mostly play my StingRay, I still go back to my SUB for some things.

The StingRay sounds like a pissed off demon (especially with the mids boosted), but it sounds like it has self-discipline. The SUB, however, is like unrefined, uncontrolled anger. That is to say, I love it.

My SUB sounds a little darker than my StingRay, and little more in your face. Maybe that's just because I play the SUB a lot harder than I play my SR, I don't know.

Even though I have a StingRay now, I will never part with my SUB. I think the SUB is better than anything under a grand. I don't think you would be disappointed with it, even if you were hoping for the active EQ

oh yeah. I bought my SUB new for 650. I was pissed when they went on sale towards the end there for only 450, but I never felt like I got robbed, because I still owned a great bass. I think it was worth every penny

The SUBs did have 2-band active preamps. I bleeb they're the same preamps found in Stingrays with 2EQs. A battery compartment at the back of the bass will tell you the bass has got an active preamp.

Shame it;s black - it'd be easier to see if there is a battery compartment ,the dead giveaway for it being an active bass!

I have one, Teal and I love it!!! 2 Band Active EQ, sounds great!

Why not ask the seller if it's active or not??

didnt get the sub bass ...

instead, i ended up getting a brand new sr5 .haha my grades came in and my parents held up to their promise that they would get me a better bass if i got my grades way up very surprisingly, i even made it to first honors.

i got a new bass, kept my savings, and this thing is soo sweet...
