This was from a garden kneeler pad, from Ace Hardware; I like to use these as sanding pad material. I'd like to get ahold of some of that black high-density foam, but it's harder to come by.
The first prototype was beveled at the bottom of the string slots, I'm going to do that to this one as well. Shoulda picked up that electric carving knife @ Goodwill...
After looking at this closer, I saw what you did. I have some of the high density black foam so I tried to make one similar. Still tweaking it.
Snipped bevels into the bottom, easier to slide on.

The high density foam is really tough to get just right. It really mutes the strings, a bit too much actually.
I'm gonna keep messing with it and see if I can find the right amount of muting.
Curious -- why the ebony back piece?
The string's diameters force it into a fan shape, otherwise. Could've used anything, really.
