The shaded section of this pic shows one of the riffs from MOP by Metallica. While I'm aware that the other three strings must be muted somehow when plucking the open E, I'm not so sure if I should mute unwanted strings when playing fretted notes.
For example, when playing the third note of that riff (i.e., 2nd fret on A string), aren't the D and G strings being naturally muted with the rest portion of that particular fretting finger on the 2nd fret? (provided that the thumb of my plucking hand is resting on the E string)
Also...I kinda have a baseless theory that....even when playing the open E, as long as the A string is muted, then the other two is muted as well...since the vibration of the open E won't travel to the other two strings in this way, lol. This enables me to play faster, but I'm not so sure if this is true.
Anyway, I would really appreciate it if I could have your thoughts on muting when playing a fast metal riff like this. Any motion saving fingering techniques are appreciated.
