Thumb on the E string unless you're playing it, nice and simple.

I wish I had thought to mention that. Your thumb can stop the both E and A string in addition, when plucking D or G. Heck it can stop D too...

On Scott's Bass, he says to use curled fingers.

Still wrong. Why bother with two postures rather than one when one accomplishes everything?

sorry for not being more clear

to clarify :your right hand thumb can rest against any string lower in pitch than the one being plucked and mute it.

muting with the left hand thumb seems unwise...
